  1. Without having listened to the episode, here are my guesses for Ryan’s fake movies:

    Torment Inc.
    Too Much Too Soon
    Royals
    Bloodshot

How many did I get right?

      • You did great, J! I’d be proud to be Andy’s “part of the problem”, except the great news is that there’s no problem at all.

The existence of this franchise does not preclude any other film from existing, and nobody on earth lives in a fascist regime that makes the FF movies a required watch, so where’s the problem? Like any other form of entertainment, if it’s not your bag, that’s ok – don’t go.

To answer Ryan’s question about what films don’t get through the strainer because I like the FF movies: not much. I love ALL cinema. I allow myself to enjoy the entire spectrum of the cinema from Moonlight to Fast and the Furious to Turkish documentaries about cats to experimental pieces like Upstream Color to The Greasy Strangler to The Kings of Summer and on and on.

I take joy wherever I can find it, and I find it in spades in the Fast and the Furious movies alongside the packed, sold-out, cheering and applauding audience I experience every time one comes out.

  2. I’m sorry, Everybody, but I just rewatched “The Last Jedi” teaser with my headphones on full blast, and I heard all the little whisperings and cameo voices that Brian was talking about… but I’m still profoundly underwhelmed (thus far).

I mean, I JUST watched the trailer, just now, and I’m hard-pressed to tell you anything that was in it. This is perhaps the least “teasery” teaser trailer I’ve ever seen in my life.

    Sorry. I tried.
    J

P.S. I still believe that Rian Johnson will make a great “Star Wars” film, though!

    • Well, I think the point of the trailer really may just be for Luke to deliver that final line. It’s what ties into the title and teases what may happen. The rest is just some pretty visuals with little content.

      ……….but it’s still awesome!

      • I believe that the answer to this and most questions in the universe is that Jay clearly hates the cinema. It’s a teaser trailer. Its job is to tease, not reveal. If you want to see and know more, just wait for the real trailer, bro.

Anyway, I hope you’re feeling better, Jay 😉

  3. Honestly this film is just flat out great. It’s just nice cars with explosions. The people who are taking this film seriously and trying to criticize the movie have no life. Don’t expect to see a movie that makes you think, just enjoy the ride and don’t think about how realistic it is. Just have a good time.

  4. I enjoyed the whole film through out it had so much comedy and action in it, very good to watch and would recommend everyone to watch it! Most fast and furious come out near my birthday and I always go to watch it to celebrate and never been disappointed by any of them. Hopefully they do another one.

  5. The repeated references to Jay’s yellow belt in tae kwan doe always makes me laugh. That’s a brilliant bit

    • I think it’s actually a gold lamé belt, and it’s in wong kar-wai. Or maybe it’s only in Jay’s imagination. I don’t think there’s ever been a verified report of Jay using his vaunted knowledge of the martial arts to wreck some suckas.

  6. Great review of Tower, Jay. I’m going to make a point of catching that one. The animation technique used in the film, incidentally, is called Rotoscoping; one of the more famous prior examples is the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings movie (which was mostly done with traditional animation, but uses Rotoscoping for a few key effects).

Excellent show by everyone, but I could tell that Jason, in particular, is back in a solid MPW groove after his latest brush with mortality. I love it when Jay slides in his little throwaway jokes as the conversation flows past, and there were two in particular (one about John Rhys-Davies, and the other about Kevin Hart) that really stuck the landing. Well done, sir.

I note for the record that we’re still waiting for the 7-11 movie giveaway, as well as the revelation of the origins of Karl’s soul. Jay did try to fob the former off on Natalie in Episode 232, but she either didn’t get the full memo, or didn’t want to deal with it. At this point, I’ve given up on Ry’s ever watching Season One of The Wire, but it would still be fun to hear what Andy thinks of The Young Pope.

    • I watched Tower immediately after hearing this episode and was absolutely not let down. I went from thinking it was a cool idea, to thinking it was a silly gimmick, to thinking it was a brilliant and innovative way to tell a story. Granted, I’ve only started getting into documentaries these past few months and so perhaps the “voice acting” technique has been done in some sort of way before, but I thought it worked particularly well in this one. They chose to focus on personal experience instead of being an exhaustive collection of objective facts and I loved it

  7. Forget Kevin Hart and Louis C. K. Check out Bill Burr. Probably the best comedian working today. His comedy is along the lines of George Carlin. His bit on Gold Digging Whores is hilarious. Check it out on you tube. Netflix is streaming quite a few of his specials.

  8. am going have to pull ryan’s card , if u can take any superhero movie so seriously and believe in all the unreal actions that happens in those movies and defend them , you cant look down on anybody that like the fast movies , that’s like the pot calling the kettle black

  9. I like how J referred to himself “as someone who loves and examines the cinema.” I grade that as 50% accurate.
    😛

I love Force Awakens. It remains a 9.5 for me after five viewings. I don’t know that Ep. 8 will equal that, and don’t necessarily need it to. But I agree with J that the teaser is underwhelming. I mean, sure, it makes me excited for the film and to see a little imagery from it, but it didn’t really grab me in a big way. Especially compared to that initial teaser for Force Awakens, which was mind-blowingly great and fresh. But with all of the films where the trailer was great but the movie was blah (I’m looking at you, Free Fire), I don’t put any major disappointment or concern in this teaser being just alright.

  10. Hey Jason….you’re sounding much stronger….happy to hear that excitement in your voice again…I love the Fast and Furious movies….can’t wait to see this one…

  11. It was really tough listening to this review. Admittedly, I quit the franchise a couple of movies ago, the last Paul Walker film, but the condescending comments were really disappointing. Yes, this movie is extremely nuts and too hyperbolic for many to accept or enjoy, but isn’t film escapism? Maybe this says more about our society than it being moronic. As I try to empathize, it’s sad, really. People don’t want to think; people want something that will more than certainly numb their brains and transports them away from their reality. People avoid captivating films because it’s also harder to find them and spend the additional time doing research or tapping into the film community. It’s disappointing that people can’t enjoy all these gems, but it’s our reality. Subjectively, these films are vapid, but I don’t think I could criticize someone for enjoying them. I like some pretty horrible films (mostly starring Steven Seagal), so who am I to tell someone these films aren’t enjoyable. I guess what I’m trying to say is, you don’t have to sound like such dicks (those of you know who you are).
