  1. Because I listen to these at work and I finish today in one hour. It means I wont be on here till the new year, but i will send in my top 10 list don’t worry!!.

Merry Christmas Guys !! and have a Great New Year!

2016 has been a shocking year, lets hope for a better 2017 and with that here is my top 5 most anticipated films for next year

    -Blade Runner 2049
    -Star Wars: Episode VIII
    -Alien: Covenant
-Marvel Films (GOTGV2,Thor Ragnarok, Spiderman Homecoming)
    -Dunkirk

  2. Finished watching The OA. I thought it was a pretty bold series but was working a little thru the last episode. I might try to rewatch the last episode to give it another chance. But really liked most of the episodes except the last episode. I will revisit it to give it my full attention maybe it will be better. Anyone else watching?

  3. J, I like how you describe that Manchester is about as real-life as any movie, ever. If you’ve ever had to plan a funeral or had a strained relationship or felt inadequate about dealing with life and loss and a teenage kid, yup, there it is. And that’s powerful at times (the scene with Affleck and Williams meeting out in town later in the film is a killer), and at times meaningful and touching and sad and humorous, just like life. I loved that about this movie.

But there is a point where the mechanics of the film can overshadow what the experience is, and with this and Moonlight, the choice of the pacing (possibly the editor’s choice/fault as well as the director) couldn’t be ignored. Kubrick could make slow pacing work; there were payoffs that came from it and more illumination of character and setting within the slower moments and scenes. I’m not saying that Manchester and Moonlight don’t have that; they definitely do, but not enough for their continual slow pacing. Manchester does a little better job of mixing things up a bit, and the flashbacks help.

Moonlight and Manchester are both great films, but not GREAT FILMS. [Ducking for cover from numerous film critics.] I’m giving them both an 8.5. Absolutely worth seeing (don’t listen to J’s “avoid” on Moonlight). But I doubt I would watch either again (well, possibly with my girls, though I think they’d appreciate the slow pacing less than I).

MPW Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone!

  4. J it’s obvious why you weren’t invited to the Critics Choice Awards – they knew you didn’t love the cinema!!! Manchester by the Sea not compelling? It was riveting to see how the major event affects a regularly happy person, as we see in the flashbacks. I’d also like to know why you get the assignment to review a serious DRAMA. Might as well send you to review a newly found Harry Potter movie. Karl, Ry, Candy – go see this movie. Although there’s no technical reason to see it in a theater, I think it adds something to experience a movie like this with others. Ry, I was waiting for a new release called Menstrual Cycle Chronicles.
