Thanks again for getting closer to “weekly.”
Jay, don’t people realize it’s not their living room? NO. I worked in movie theatres for the first half of my career and around the 2000s when phones started to happen we had to police people who seemed insistent on “checking” their texts. As you can imagine it’s gotten worse. But peer pressure from the audience, as noted in my Odyssey show and Alamo Drafthouse DOES work. Talking in the lobby, watching the movie in here.
Was it this podcast talking about how films that are streaming tend to be extra dumb and say things 3 times because they know people aren’t watching? Same with some cinema-bound flims, which means people DON’T HAVE to pay close attention and it almost gives them permission to do something else (talk, phone, post memes).
Karl is right that most people don’t want to keep being dicks. By simply “noticing” them, looking at them, saying that “Hey it’s hard to hear with you talking if you can…” or just putting your finger to your lips is really usually enough. If they insist to keep being dicks (10% of the time?) this is not your showing. Leave. Go out, get your money back, theatres will always give it back. “There is a group of drunk seniors in there and they won’t stop talking. Am I the first one to complain?” They don’t like it any more than you do.
If you look at them, that’ll shut them up. Look, 60 year olds. They’re not punks in Warriors. (My first summer working in a theatre was during Warriors. Oh boy people went to that wanting to have a time in the mall back then.) Know your rights but also understand what you’re willing to take. I’ve been in that situation and it’s better to come back later or tomorrow (or move to the OTHER theatre showing it?) than sit and stew and be completely distracted.
I liked your mini reviews too. I want you to be nicer to Andy but he makes it hard, doesn’t he.

Jay, no one should have to put up with that crap. You should have karate-ed those old-ass Chatty Cathies on the spot. “This is a MOVIE, jerks, not bingo night at the Golden Acres retirement home!” It’s what Jason Statham would have wanted.
I’ve only seen the trailer for THE ISOLATE THIEF, but with all of that ham and cheese, Sean Bean should have opened a sandwich shop.
