Movie Podcast Weekly Ep. 275: I, Tonya (2018) and Hostiles (2018) and Den of Thieves (2018) and 12 Strong (2018)

Episode 275 - Den of Thieves

For the first time in quite a long time, your hosts of Movie Podcast Weekly actually try to bring you earnest and semi-academic film reviews. Unfortunately, since MPW is usually more of a trainwreck smashing into a clown car, by comparison, Episode 275 will probably seem a little long-winded and boring… Sorry. But Jason says he found it to be very fulfilling movie podcasting. In this show, we bring you Feature Reviews of I, Tonya (2018) and Hostiles (2018) and Den of Thieves (2018) and 12 Strong (2018). We’re joined by special guest William Rowan Jr. of the brand-new Network show, Movie Moments Podcast and The Sci-Fi Podcast. We also bring you MPW’s thoughts on the infamous Golden Raspberry Awards (aka “the Razzies”). Join us!

By the way, check out Jason’s new short-form solocast for cinephiles called Considering the Cinema!

If you’re new to our show… Movie Podcast Weekly typically features four hosts — Jason, Andy, Karl and Geek Cast Ry — along with frequent guests. We give you our verdicts on at least one new movie release from the current year that’s currently playing in theaters, as well as several mini reviews of whatever we’ve been watching lately. New episodes release every single week!

  1. I have a bone to pick with you Jay, lol You said Hostiles was an avoid. I disagree. I liked it. I didn’t feel it was that slow it kept me interested the whole movie. I can’t remember what you said about All the money in the world but that movie was slow. You also said it was a well made movie and the performances were good but you gave it a 4!! I’m no critic but I feel a 4 is way to harsh. I give it a 7. Still love the show. Just my opinion.

    • I totally agree with you, Gene! Hostiles was such a great movie, and I gave it a 9/10. I CAN NOT believe Jay gave it a 4 and said avoid. I’m so mad at him right now!

      • I have to pile on here. I was completely shocked that Jason gave it an avoid as well. The only thing I agree with is Christian Bale’s performance being one of his best. I though he was incredible. Other than that, I completely disagree with Jason. There are plenty of slower paced films that came out this past year than this, “All the Money in the World” being one of them, I agree Gene. I gave “Hostiles” an 8.5 out of 10 and found it to be a thoughtful and engaging experience. The only thing I can think of is that Jason was expecting something completely different and it threw him off his game.

  2. I love it when WRJ is on the show, he always has a unique and interesting perspective on things and always makes me laugh. I just started to listen to his movie moments podcast and it is great too, so give it a listen if you haven’t yet.

  3. Andy is my favorite part of MPW. Brilliant moment when Andy distracted Jay from WRJ’s eight-film mini-review extravaganza by texting him to say, “Let me know when that guy finally shuts up.”

Also, I feel like Episode 274 was tastier than a suitcase full of buttholes. It made me feel like when I go over to my brother Clint’s house and there’s a quesadilla on the counter and I’m like, “Is anyone else going to eat that,” and Clint’s all, “Have at it, bro.” I was over there just yesterday, in fact, but I don’t even remember whether I ate the quesadilla or not.

    BOOM. Where’s my wig, Tony?

  4. Greetings from Finland! Your podcast always makes my day. Don’t understand all the Ozark hype though. That show sucks monkey balls. Trusted Andy so watched that whole sh*t through expecting it to get better. Never did. Bateman has as much charisma as my dog that is currently trying to lick his own a**.

  5. I’m an HMP listener by listen to this podcast with my husband. We absolutely love how your all describe movies without plot spoilers.

Jay, you are so articulate with your descriptions of how you feel about movies. And I’m not a big fan of WRJ and grit my teeth every time he tries to prove you wrong. Insert eye roll here.

I’m so intrigued by this Brawl in Cellblock 9. I cant wait to see I Tonya. Thanks for the great episode.

    • Hi PV!
I’m so grateful you ventured over to listen to this silly show! As your little “kid brother” in Horror, ha ha, I’m flattered! You’re gonna dig “Brawl in Cellblock 99,” because it has some pretty heinous violence. “The Punisher” Netflix series goes even farther in its last couple of episodes (and it doesn’t feel like Marvel or superheroes). Anyway, thanks so much for checking out MPW.
      Sincerely,
      Jay
P.S. I think William might eventually win you over… ha ha He sure has won us over. 🙂

    • PV,
I’m sorry that I make you want to roll your eyes, I honestly don’t blame you. You’re not the only person I have that effect on.

I have what doctors call “emotional mood swings”. I think it comes from me bottling up my thoughts and feelings for long periods of time and then I jump on a podcast and my thoughts and feelings start to torrent out of me. I’m also very passionate about everything and easily frustrated. Maybe there are others out there that can relate.

But regardless, I would like to say sorry to MPW (and especially to Jason) for my ranting about “What is the truth”.
It really wasn’t the time or place. And often whenever I get really going, my listening skills become weaker. I might have been on topic, but I was way out of line.
I promise to be less preachy if I’m ever invited back on the show.

      • For the record, William, I loved the “What is truth?” discussion in our “I, Tonya” review. I feel like it was very relevant to a review of that film. You wouldn’t believe how many people I’ve talked to about that movie who just assumed it was all 100 percent true. So, I think that discussion was definitely warranted. When are you joining us again? 🙂
        -J

  6. Things that make me glad:
-WRJ on another network episode. Always a welcome presence.
-Andy engaging with the material and taking things seriously. It’s easy to forget how thoughtful and multidimensional he can be when he actually tries.
    -A Weezer discussion

    Things that make me sad:
    -Weezer bashing
-Andy when he’s playing his indifferent troll character. Too reminiscent of so many people in my age cohort that think it’s lame to be passionate about things and take a detached and/or ironic stance to pop culture.
