Movie Podcast Weekly Ep. 263: Jigsaw (2017) and Only the Brave (2017) and Thank You for Your Service (2017)

Episode 263

We can’t tell whether this is our worst episode ever (or merely one of the worst). Such as it is, this is Episode 263 of Movie Podcast Weekly, the Clown Car of Movie Podcasting and the Most Offensive Family-Friendly Podcast on the Internet. We bring you Feature Reviews of Jigsaw (2017) and Thank You for Your Service (2017) and finally, Only the Brave. And to punish Andy for last week’s “Brave” shenanigans, we forced him to watch (and review) My Little Pony: The Movie (2017).

If you’re new to our show… Movie Podcast Weekly typically features four hosts — Jason, Andy, Karl and Geek Cast Ry — along with frequent guests. We give you our verdicts on at least one new movie release from the current year that’s currently playing in theaters, as well as several mini reviews of whatever we’ve been watching lately. New episodes release every single week!

  1. I back Bryan 100 percent on his partial review of Season 2 of Stranger Things. GCB, you’re in for a treat (or more likely have already had one): All three of the things that you specifically mentioned liking, Steve Harrington, Bob Newby (the Sean “Samwise” Astin character), and Season 2’s more colorful language, pay off in spades down the homestretch. I loved almost everything about Season 2 and ended up enjoying it even more than Season 1. Which is kind of amazing, because I rewatched Season 1 just before Season 2 got here, and thought it was better the second time through (this after thinking it was absolutely fantastic when seeing it for the first time last year).

I couldn’t tell whether Jay was doing it intentionally (for comedic effect) or innocently, but I chortled each of the three or four times that he lapsed (or “lapsed”) and said something to “Bryan” after catching his initial slip-up. Also, Sandy’s line about having a friend named “Mason” was the sort of low-key sideswipe that make him an MVP of MPW. I also got a kick out of Sandy’s valiant attempt to plot summarize the My Little Pony movie, including the observation that, “Some wonky-horned unicorn comes down and, I don’t know, is mad about something.” Pure MPW gold.

Also, the Irishman gets a 2 out of 10 for skipping MPW to go to a Halloween party when it wasn’t even Halloween night. Boo. Hiss!

  2. If Andy liked Jack Whitehall’s standup special, I’d recommend that he watches Whitehall’s series, Travels with My Father. It came out a few months ago and features Whitehall traveling through Asia with his father. If you’ve seen Whitehall’s various specials, you’ll have a pretty good idea what his father is like and he lives up to the image. It’s only six episodes at thirty minutes apiece. Well worth the watch.

  3. I love, LOVE that you recommended the brilliance of Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Delicatessen and City of Lost Children, both great. I’m a fan of Alien:resurrection because of his involvement. Amelie is brilliant and I adore A Very Long Engagement. I still need to view MicMacs and his other newer film, but it definitely enhances any film cinephile library of cinematic understanding. Great recommend.

  4. I loved season 2 of Stranger Things. It was better than season 1. Really liked all the subplots and the eventual tie in towards the end of the season. Almost feel like the first 2 seasons are build up for an epic 3rd season. Got all the characters set up for a big showdown with either the mind flayer or an even bigger bad. The only problem I had with season 2 was the new characters Max and Billy. They really didn’t add anything to the series. They could have not been in this season and really nothing would have changed. BTW, I’ve seen all the of the Saw movies up till Jigsaw. I really have no desire. Enough is enough. I would rather have had the new Insidious movie come out this year instead of Jigsaw. Much better franchise.
