  1. I was chuckling listening to the breakdown of the Grammy performances. As a white male Japanese radioactive lizard from the sea, I am not necessarily qualified to speak on such racially/politically charged matters, but here we go:

I for one agree with Jay. I thought Beyonce’s performance was quite interesting, and I enjoyed it. Also, I thought her message about setting a positive example for kids of color is an important one. Ryan, I think you were nearly there with your suspicions of her portraying images of the feminine mystique. If only I had my Ancient Civilizations text book in front of me, I could nail down some of the more famous goddesses.

Also loved the Bachelor pool. Did anyone pick Corinne??? Cause they’re gonna win big. If this year proved anything, it’s that our perceptions about winners and losers are completely off base. The Cavs comeback, the Cubs, Patriots, Moonlight, and even the President have proved that when it comes to favorites and advance metrics, that 1% of improbability is the only thing we can hang our hats on. Corinne was played as the impossible winner/villain, and now I think the show is hers to lose.

Can’t wait to listen to the Uncle Oscars episode!

  2. I’m with Lee and disagree highly with Ry about his Lego Batman comments. I remember *many* jokes and scenes and moments, and think it was excellent. There was a great wealth of smart and subtle humor throughout, and I also think that adults should get a lot more of the humor than kids, contrary to what Ry said. Just a tiny notch below the Lego Movie for me. I think I gave it a 8.5 when I commented on it a couple weeks ago.

And actually, I was amused that Ry says several times how the movie is forgettable and that he doesn’t remember anything about it, but then also describes scenes in some detail. Um.

Also, as I recall, Batman is shown to be a master builder a couple times, though it’s fleeting, when he is putting his vehicles together on the fly (literally). It’s not given too much time or attention, but it’s there.

    ————————-

I’m right with you guys on John Wick, though, for both parts. I thought the first one was pretty good, and about a 7.5, and part 2 was more like a 6.5. I don’t really have a thing for violence like J, but I can appreciate it in a film if it’s really creative and impactful, or if the film containing it is particularly well done. Things like Fury Road and Kill Bill have a ton of violence, but I like both of them much better than John Wick for giving that violence more of an interesting context and being more creative with it. The John Wick films have some creative violent moments, but it just becomes so frequent and repetitive after a while, and I just didn’t care much.

    ———————

You mentioned an Amazon series near the end, and that reminds me that you guys need to check out Sneaky Pete, which is on Amazon now. It’s awesome. A conman (Giovanni Ribisi) who is leaving prison poses as his cellmate, who has been estranged from his family for 20 years, in order to deal with a former mark who is after him and holding his brother for an old debt. Bryan Cranston is the mark and is a really great bad dude in this (well, he was a bad dude in Breaking Bad, too, but it’s more overt here). He gives a long monologue of sorts in a scene at the end of, I think, the 4th episode, and it’s amazing. I still have 2-3 episodes left, but I’ve found it to be very fun and quite well done in all respects.

I had started to watch The Young Pope but lost interest (sorry Ry), and did enjoy the first episode of Taboo, so I will continue with that. But for now, Sneaky Pete has my full attention.

  3. Yes, Ryan, The Young Pope is meant to be (at least partially) viewed as dark comedy. And it was excellent; a nice mixture of humor, surrealism, and pathos – which, when you think about it, pretty well describes most religions.

  4. Finally got to see John Wick Chapter 2 and I just saw John Wick for the first time a few days before. I have to say I really love these movies. I love the whole world this franchise is building with this worldwide league of assassins, which I realize is not exactly new territory, but the films handle it in a way I’ve never seen. I enjoy the safe spots with the hotels, and the coins, and the respect they give each other, and so on. These movies are a lot of fun and this is a franchise I can get behind. The ending to Part 2 sets the next film up perfectly.

They are both 9’s for me and I recommend anyone who hasn’t seen them to do so immediately. Can’t wait for the third one.

  5. Ry, you and I were thinking the same thing as Jay was discussing the viewing of Alive with his wife and his 6 and 9-yr olds. WTF. Jay you’ve told us that your wife has wondered why movies can’t only have positive messages. Yet she watches that R movie and allows her kids to watch it? Shouldn’t the church police be alerted? Social Services? As Ry said, something isn’t making sense here.

Thanks for the podcast each and every week.
