Movie Podcast Weekly Ep. 154: The Transporter Refueled (2015) and A Walk in the Woods (2015) and Cinderella (2015) and MPW’s 2015 Fall / Winter Preview

Episode 154

Happy birthday to Ryan this week! He’s 14 and has facial hair. It’s time for Movie Podcast Weekly, the most offensive family-friendly podcast — ever! This is Episode 154. This is the episode where Andy says a crescent wrench can be considered pornography…

In this show, your four hosts bring you our MPW Fall / Winter Preview of all the upcoming new releases for the remainder of this year. We also reveal MPW’s plan for ramping up to our coverage of “Star Wars Ep. VII: The Force Awakens.”

This episode of Movie Podcast Weekly brings you three Feature Reviews of The Transporter Refueled, which is a PG-13 action movie that inspired Andy to write and read a heartfelt and passionate open letter that he penned for the movie industry and parents. This movie also inspired Jason to do some soul-searching about the direction his life has taken…

After denying Andy the opportunity to see the film — but going to see it himself — Karl brings us a Feature Review of A Walk in the Woods. And even though Jason and most listeners probably had no interest in the new, live-action Cinderella, Jason brings a surprising Feature Review of that film, as well. Join us!

If you’re new to our show… Movie Podcast Weekly typically features four hosts — Jason, Andy, Karl and Geek Cast Ry — along with frequent guests. We give you our verdicts on at least one new movie release from the current year that’s currently playing in theaters, as well as several mini reviews of whatever we’ve been watching lately. And we usually provide specialized genre recommendations. New episodes release every single Wednesday.

  1. I’m still fairly new to the podcast (First episode was MPW 149) and I’ve come to the conclusion that an unannounced weekly segment is “Jay depresses the *Bleep* out of the listeners”. Feeling a bit too jolly? Listen to the start of any MPW to hear Jay bring your mood down by bringing up some real life tragedy. Looking forward to next week’s MPW tale of how Little Johnny’s puppy, Spot, was ran over by a car in front of his Johnny’s own eyes.

Luckily, the rest of the show is pretty upbeat and fun.

You didn’t mention it on your highly accurate IMDb list, but also coming out on October 16th is the Goosebumps movie starring Jack Black. I’m sure it’s going to suck, but being a 90’s kid, the Goosebumps books played such a big role in my childhood. The fact that it comes out the day before my 29th birthday makes it all the more worth watching.

    • I don’t know, I feel like that’s going to be a lot of fun. I’m kind of looking forward to it. But the movie that has me drooling is KRAMPUS. It looks like a sort of spiritual successor to GREMLINS but with a far more evil twist. I’m sure that will end up in my year’s top 10.

      • I don’t care what Krampus is about, who’s in it or anything other than the fact that Michael Dougherty is directing it. Like others, I’ve been dying to see his second movie after absolutely loving Trick ‘r Treat.

        • Given the comments I’ve seen so far, I’ll probably be lynched for this, but I think Trick r’ Treat is slightly overrated. It’s good, but it’s not slap-yo-mama good. I’ve been meaning to revisit it though. Maybe I’ll feel differently about it.

  2. Hey guys! I’m anxiously waiting to get my hands on the first edition of the MPW t-shirt! Thing is, I don’t wear guy’s shirts, so…. make sure you get one in a ladies cut, size small for me!
    Thanks!

  3. By the way, I want to congratulate Andy for watching IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA in its entirety. It’s such a great show and one of my all-time favorites. The characters, even though grotesque in their outlook of life, are super entertaining and remind me a bit of my friends. Not in their back-stabbing and selfish ways, but in their dynamic amongst each other. Anyway, good job, Andy! Now, when is your homework section coming back? I feel like you guys come up with cool ideas and then abandon them. Please don’t.

  4. I’m really hoping that the VidAngel software’s only feature is to cover cuss words with a loud, muppet-like ‘MMMMEEEEEEPP!!!!’. If that’s the case, I’m getting 30-40 licenses to give to friends and family right now. 🙂 Also, I love the subtle addition of Andy’s ‘light it up’ in the beginning. It’s perfect right before the start. Jason produces the show like he’s done this before. 🙂

  5. Jay, I’m 110% with you on Avatar. I think I’ve mentioned it before, but I find the hatred for that movie from the rest of the hosts quite surprising. No other film has managed to wow me at the theater the way Avatar did (until Gravity came along that is). Avatar is awesome and Ry, Andy, and Karl can go *MEEP* themselves 😉

    • Juan,

You made my day. I was so sad that no one had commented on “Avatar,” and fairly shocked that no one took issue with Andy’s Transporter / pornography rant. (Where is everybody on that? Andy saying a wrench could be pornographic…)

Of all the things in this world that I don’t understand, one of the greatest is the lack of love, respect or even mere appreciation for James Cameron’s “Avatar.”

If I try to figure out where all the hate comes from, I have a theory that subconsciously people do not like the tall, slender, Gumby-shaped Na’vi. Their body shape really bothers me, too, actually. And I think the fact that they’re such a vibrant blue also bothers people. It also bothers me that Jake’s avatar looks like Utah film critic Luke Hickman. I love Luke, but not his avatar version…

I think “Avatar” was built up so much before its release that people expected it to be the Second Coming of Cinema. And though the 3-D was pretty fantastic, people were just let down and underwhelmed, once it was all said and done.

But what’s most difficult for me to understand is how so many other “lesser films” get a pass from people (like my co-hosts), while “Avatar” is more or less reviled.

Thanks for standing with me on “Avatar,” Juan. You will have a place with me in the glowing gardens of the moon of Pandora in the next life.

      J

      • You’re very welcome, Jay. Now we can be officially friends and maybe even brothers! I can understand people being underwhelmed or bothered by the story, but come on! When Avatar came out, it completely blew away anything and everything visually. If you saw this on IMAX on 3D, there is no way that anyone could’ve walked away disappointed, so I’m calling your fellow hosts a bunch of liars! I mean, I had the most mind-blowing and spiritual, journey that I’ve ever had. It was like I was on drugs the whole time, only I wasn’t. I even got a bit of the Avatar blues after leaving the theater. Everything seemed so dull and boring in comparison. I wanted to live in Pandora! As far as movie theater experiences go, I still think Avatar is king. And you can quote me on this. Avatar is a 10 and it’s a must-see cinematic masterpiece. But hater’s gon’ hate.

      • “Where is everybody on that? Andy saying a wrench could be pornographic…”

A wrench is pretty phallic looking. Then when it’s brand new and all sexy shinny? Nice.

I won’t say I’m crazy about it and I’ve only seen it once, but I enjoyed AVATAR. There is some weirdness to it like the whole using your ponytail to bang and to ride your wannabe flying horse. Personally, I think the hype turns a lot of people away. When it’s the highest grossing movie of all time and initially had a ton of “One of the best movies ever~!” praise, it puts expectations far too high. If the movie only made a good profit and had watchers claim it’s just good, detractors would likely be a little more tame in their hate.

      • As far as Andy’s rant, I can understand where he’s coming from and I can see why he’d be so agitated after having witnessed firsthand a horrific real-life tragedy. But yeah, I think his view on pornography is a bit too heavy-handed and extreme. Again, I understand why, but I don’t necessarily agree with it. It’s all about perspective, I think.

  6. I own Avatar on blu ray and think its great…As for Andy…I love the guy but he’s the first male prude I know…I respect his beliefs and I agree with his opinion on exposing children to sexually explicit things…but this is not the PMRC era anymore…and in all reality…there is no escape from anything you may find offensive…The world is ugly…and its up to the parents to raise there children and teach them right from wrong…You can’t stop the machine…You either get on board and adapt or you move to the mountains and build a cabin…i hope this doesn’t sound to extreme…

    • I don’t think your words are too extreme, Shannon. Actually, I’m with you on most of what you say. Like you say, we live in an ugly world. Not only that, but we live in a world with many different kinds of people with many different kinds of beliefs with many different degrees of tolerance. Andy’s definition (and tolerance) of pornography isn’t necessarily mine or yours. His message, although noble, is moot when it comes to reaching the masses because we’re not all going to agree with him and most certainly with the movie studios because there’s no way they’ll want to stop making money. It all boils down to the parents. They are the guides and protectors. How can we possibly measure “good guidance” or “good parenting”? I don’t know, this is too complex of a subject. There are lots of grey areas that weren’t included in Andy’s speech that need to be addressed in order to arrive at a sensible conclusion.

  7. Also it comes down to kids will be kids and teens will be teens and everything is at there finger tips now…unlike when I was a child…I just think it’s impossible now to shield your child like it used to be…because once they leave your sight it’s all there…

  8. Hey boys and girls –

I’m finally back on the boards trying to play catch-up on the last few weeks of MPN shows. Just a few quick thoughts on this episode…

Thanks, Ryan, for bringing a sane (and intelligent) perspective of FURY ROAD to MPW. J, Ry has earned our respect because he recognizes a great film as such.

Cue up 1:09:52 for another example of Juavino’s corrupting influence. #winning

Also, Andy shined in this episode… again. If I’m being real, he was my least favorite host when I first started listening to the show, but he’s quickly becoming my favorite.
