  1. Oh boy, when I saw the 1/10 rating for Andy’s segment I thought “this is gonna be good” and fast-forwarded straight to it.

Now I just feel like a total jerk! I’m genuinely sorry Andy, I thought it would just be amusing to get your reaction to something totally ridiculous and gross and I didn’t mean to get you in trouble. As an irresponsible single guy of questionable moral fibre it can be easy to forget that you fellows have family that you have to explain this stuff to and what might seem like gross-out fun to a desensitised dolt like myself could be construed as perverse or disturbing by more normal folks! I hope you made it clear to your wife (whose concern is totally understandable, especially considering how bad the IMDB descriptions sound) that it was a stupid prank request and not something that you sought out of your own volition.

I feel like a crappy super-villain whose jerk-power is to cause issues in families he doesn’t even know and who live thousands of miles away.

    • David (AKA home-wrecker…jk),

At least you recommended it as part of his unseemly homework. The worst is when you recommend a movie you truly love, only to offend family and friends or make them laugh at you and your tastes. Boy, I’ve been there.

      • I think we’ve all been there at some point Vance.

I just feel like I kind of took advantage of Andy’s commitment to his segment and his willingness to take recommendations at face value.

In my defense my memory of the movie was that the more risqué elements weren’t totally explicit and it was tonally kind of more on the goofy and over-the-top side of thingsas opposed to starkly and disturbingly perverse.

Also looking at the IMDB parents guide for the movie it seems like whoever wrote that used a little artistic licence and added some extra details that I don’t remember being in the film at all.

Anyway, once again I’m truly sorry for causing Andy any trouble!

Sometimes it feels like everything I touch just turns to dust and bones…….

  2. I watched “Halloween” a few years ago on AMC. It was moderately scary for an older film. Of course, I had commercial breaks to build up my courage. And it was edited for content (though I think the violence was all there).

I loved the slow-burn suspense and the iconic music. It really amped up the tension. I appreciate these types of horror films more than the gory, high kill count slashers. This is a good example of how far I will go with the slasher genre these days. I know, I know…I’m a big baby.

    • On the contrary it sounds like you just have a healthy appreciation for restrained, well crafted horror Vance. There’s nothing to be ashamed of about preferring suspense and atmosphere over blood and guts.

The guys should maybe do a segment where they try to come up with recommendations for you of mostly bloodless but effective horror movies. There are quite a few out there. Off the top of my head “Black Christmas” is another one that’s short on the graphic kills but chock full of great suspense and palpable atmosphere.

And I’m curious what your thoughts are on a movie like “Psycho” if you’ve seen it?

      • Jay has actually shared a few good movie lists in the past that cater more to my horror-light preferences. I haven’t looked at the list in a while but I have it somewhere. I’ve referred to it during the Halloween season the past few years.

I loved the original “Psycho”. Hitchcock is definitely more my speed. I haven’t seen the remake.

I can also appreciate a good Sci-Fi creature-feature. I liked “Alien”, loved “Aliens”, and consider “Jaws” to be one of the greatest movies of all time. I still haven’t seen “The Thing”. I think that was on my list. I need to get on that.

        • Well those are all excellent movies. Some of my favourites actually.

A word of warning on “The Thing” though; it is more overtly gruesome than most of those other movies, though it’s of an equally high calibre. It definitely has a bit of gore but it never feels like throwing buckets of blood around is the entire point of the movie. It’s extremely tense and atmospheric and incredibly well crafted.

As for the “Psycho” remake I’d say avoid it unless you want to see how much mood and effectiveness would have been deprived from the original had it been shot in colour and starring Vince Vaughn.

I’d actually recommend the “Psycho” sequels over the remake. By a long shot in fact. They are a little bit more violent than the original but “Psycho II” especially is a very underrated and interesting movie. Anthony Perkins reprises his role as Norman Bates and while it lacks Hitchcock’s style and vision it still does some interesting stuff with the character.

  3. I loved the Thundercats cartoon series! Definitely had a nostalgia when you mentioned it, Jay. Nice!

Ey, Andy… you totally ignored my recommendation hehe! If you can, please take a look at Before I Go to Sleep 2014. I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

For Jay, check out Below 2002. Figured you might like it since you’re a horror fan.

    That’s it!

    More power to all!

    • As far as openings for a TV cartoon, the opening is top notch animation. Not only are there tons of fancy effects that still look great, but pay attention to the transitions and the way everything flows. It’s juts pure awesomeness.

Jay, I’ve also re-watched the old Thundercats series recently (within the last 5 years or so) and I loved it. Yes, the show’s kind of hokey in how every episode has a lesson to teach, but that’s something that newer shows lack that I think is kind of a shame. If kids are going to be obsessed with a show, it might as well have a nice underlying message.

Has anyone seen the remake? It’s quite amazing. There were few that hated the anime makeover, but I for one love the updated look. The tone of the show is also much more serious but without getting too dark. It achieves something that a lot of cartoons these days are doing, which is appeal to the young while at the same time appealing to the older crowd. The new dynamics between the characters are great and surprisingly mature for a cartoon of this nature. For instance, the struggle of following a young and inexperienced leader is much more palpable and it’s intensified by the fact that Lion-O and Tygra are now brothers and they both not only have different ideas on how to lead their people, but they share the same love interest in Cheetara. It makes for some excellent character development. There’s an episode that deals with time and death and it’s so good you guys. In it there’s a race of plant people who you get to see get born, grow up, grow old, and die all during the course of an episode. It’s a very interesting idea and it’s very well executed. Anyway, I’m probably making it sound better than it is, but it’s still definitely worth your time. You should check it out, Jay!

  4. Just wanted to say great show! I listen to the podcast while I’m at work and makes the long hours being a public accountant a little more bearable. The reviews are a tremendous help in narrowing my watch list since I have a job that pays no consideration to work life balance. I’ve listened to almost every episode and I definitely have never thought anything is pushing the line ever. Paul Walker stuff was a little bit early and close to the line, but I have a sense of humor, and all in all a great podcast! This podcast and “How Did This Get Made” are two podcasts I always make time to listen to every week. I thought the new podcast “Serial” was really good but did anything ever happen at the end? That guy Jay in show, wonder how he feels about the whole thing, pretty much just casted a wide net of suspicion on him.

I took your advice and watched “The Babadook” this past weekend. It was a really great movie, with a great performance from Essie Davis. I guess she is in “The Slap” the British version maybe. I saw the trailer the US version of “The Slap”, and I just thought that looks like a horrible premise for a TV series but it has Peter Sarsgaard, Zachary Quinto, and Uma Thurman in it, and must be a hit overseas. Still feels like I’ll have to force myself to watch it for some reason because of the premise. I’m not a very big horror movie watcher but really thought “The Babadook” was done well and creepy. Have any of you ever listened to the “Nosleep” podcast? I think some of you may like it since you love horror movies.

I wanted to also mention the movie “About Time” and how me and my wife loved that movie. I think it is Karl that always mentions Richard Curtis movies and this movie has stuck with me. It has great dialogue, like every Richard Curtis movie it seems, and the twist was great. Being a father now of one, and upcoming two that movie really touched home. Everything I see Domhnall Gleeson, “Black Mirror”, and “Frank”, he has been very good in. “Frank” was a odd but original, and I liked it. Probably a 7.5 if I had to rate it. Just looked “Frank” up on IMDB, wow, I thought that was Michael Fassbender but thought there was no way in hell that was him in “Frank”.

Just a few last comments. I have never heard of “My Left Foot” either! I’ll have to watch it sometime. Have any of you reviewed the movie, “Two Lovers” with Joaquin Phoenix? May have been an episode I missed. I know it is old but I’m unsure why I always liked it. It is one of those movies like, “About Time”, that has always stuck with me, even though “About Time” is way better. I could see this being a love or hate, I mean Joaquin Phoenix is a love or hate actor for many it seems, and Gwyneth Paltrow also, I didn’t like her performance in this movie. I really liked Vinessa Shaw in her role though, her movie career seems to have never taken off, unless I’m forgetting something.

    Top 500

  5. The funniest thing Andy has ever uttered on the podcast was on this very show when he said that he didn’t know how to use YouTube very well. Hahahahahaha. “Can someone please help me find the video on YouTube? I can’t find it.” Hahahahaha.

  6. Well Friday the 13th is tomarrow and finally my hip replacement surgery…hope I have the first installment of the Friday franchise waiting for me whenever the nurse lets me listen to my ipod…I better not get a Nurse Ratched or I’ll have to go Jason on her ass!!! Friday the 13th is my favorite franchise and can’t wait for the HMP spin on it…Love everyone on this site and I’ll talk to you all again soon…

  7. Thanks Andy for finally listening to my pleas. I hope the movies are of your liking. At the very least, they won’t get you in trouble… or will they? No, they won’t. I promise.

      • Hahaha no need to feel like that, man. Andy is a grown up, he knows what he’s doing. And yours was merely a suggestion. There were consequences to it all, but nothing that time and flowers can’t fix.

      • David,
It’s totally fine. After all, you gave Andy a film that was exactly what his segment is about: the unseemly. Don’t feel bad at all. His wife is an awesome gal, and Andy deserves a little heat every once in a while, anyway. : )
        Jay
