Movie Podcast Weekly Ep. 397: Power Ballad (2026) and Masters of the Universe (2026)

Oh my hell, we’re releasing another episode out of sequence again. Yes, despite the fact that Episode 384 was the most recent release at the time of this recording, Jason Pyles, Kombat Karl “The Mad Irishman” Huddleston, and special guest Spawn of the Dead are back for Episode 397 of Movie Podcast Weekly. In this episode, we bring you Feature Reviews of Power Ballad (2026) and Masters of the Universe (2026), along with our usual Mini Reviews of What We’ve Been Watching Lately. Along the way, the crew discusses the passing of a podcasting pioneer who helped inspire MPW, Kevin Costner’s seemingly never-ending delay of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, the return of a new season of Silo, Facebook settlement checks, and the ongoing misadventures and random thoughts of Spawn of the Dead.

Note: This episode was recorded on June 9, 2026.

Feature Reviews:

POWER BALLAD (2026)
Jason = 8 ( Theater / Strong Rental )

Jason praises filmmaker John Carney’s “Modern Musical” approach, Paul Rudd’s performance, and the songwriting-centered story, while Karl remains patronizingly interested enough to maybe eventually catch it on streaming (but no promises)

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (2026)
Jason = 7.5 ( Theater / Rental )
Spawn of the Dead = 6 ( Rental )

Jason argues that the new film finally captures the spirit of the classic He-Man cartoon far better than the 1987 version, while Spawn finds it mildly entertaining.

Wrap-Up:
– Karl reports receiving a whopping $6.69 Facebook settlement payment
– Discussion about what the settlement was for
– Spawn of the Dead promotes his YouTube channel featuring original narrated horror stories
– Spawn also reminds listeners to check out Jay of the Dead’s New Horror Movies
– Jason plugs Considering the Cinema and Horror Movie Weekly
– Thanks to listeners for sticking with MPW, despite the unusual release order of episodes (and its unfortunate association with the likes of A Guy Named Andy)

  1. Hi Guys!
    Paddy Glynn here from Ireland again, you read out my message on your show a few episodes back and I got disproportionately excited to hearing my message read out than any grown man should!!
    Since the Karl has asked twice if I had come back to say where I am from so I could not let down my fellow Irishman. I am from a town called Ballinasloe in County Galway in the west of Ireland.(queue Andy butchering the Irish accent while mispronpuncing where I am from haha)
    Excellent show as always you guys! You are the highlight of my week! Keep it up and let me know whenever you plan a MPW trip to Ireland, I will put ye up,show ye round and we will have a feckin ball!! Twill be mighty craic!!

    Love you guys,
    -Paddy
