Movie Podcast Weekly Ep. 384: The Rip (2026), Dead Man's Wire (2026), 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026)

MOVIE PODCAST WEEKLY is back with Episode 384! Join your fearless cinematic degenerates, Jason Pyles, Combat Karl “The Mad Irishman” Huddleston, Ryan Elliott, and a Guy Named Andy as they tackle Feature Reviews of Netflix’s gritty crime-thriller The Rip (2026), the hostage-drama throwback Dead Man’s Wire (2026), and zombie sequel extravaganza 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026). Along the way, the gang debates whether Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are secretly making movies just to hang out together, Karl gushes over Starfleet Academy while the internet apparently hates it, and Jay accidentally discovers that Stranger Things is … actually good? Plus: Surprise movie meetups, birthday shenanigans, Christian symbolism in horror films, and Karl uses ChatGPT to improve his résumé because apparently the machines really are taking over. Same MPW chaos. Same questionable judgment.

NOTE: MPW is now an “explicit” podcast.

    • Thank you for letting me know. I have been trying to fix the problem all weekend. It’s weird because I can get it to work properly for a short period of time, and then it stops working again. (I haven’t seen this in 16 years of podcasting.) But rest assured, I will get it fixed eventually. I’m sorry for the aggravation and inconvenience.
      Sincerely,
      -J

  1. OK, hearing Andy confess to being hoist with his own petard on the way to see “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” is an AMAZING moment in the history of MPW. My final ruling is that it’s not as iconic as Jay immediately losing his grip on the long-promised Peanut Buster Parfait in Episode 185 (“Dammit!”), but I did have to think about it for a moment. Bravo, gentlemen!

I’m a bit surprised by the generally harsh consensus opinion of “The Rip.” I do agree that the most notable reward of “The Rip” is seeing Matt and Ben together again. And when I try to imagine it with two lesser actors, with lesser shared chemistry, in those roles, it definitely suffers. So maybe I’m not really surprised at all by the MPW pile-on. I did watch “The Rip” while using the elliptical trainer in the basement, so it might have gained an extra point or two in my estimation simply by capably providing a distraction from huffing and puffing.

I’m intrigued to eventually find out what the crew thinks about “Project Hail Mary.” I loved the book and enjoyed the movie. The “in media res” deep space beginning of the movie is a little shaky, but it finds its footing fairly quickly.

Special kudos to Jay for persisting through getting the technical issue affecting this episode fixed. I tried to listen over the weekend after reporting the issue to Jay last week, and whatever demon was infesting the inner workings had resurfaced.

  2. I almost forgot! Welcome to the “Stranger Things” bandwagon, Jay! GCR, Kombat Karl, and I been keeping your seat warm. Lots of fun adventures ahead!

Also, I know you hate watching plays, but if you happen to be in a theatergoing mood at some point, then there’s a hot new dramatist named William Shakespeare who’s been putting out some great stuff.
