  1. Funny you guys mentioned how great the voice actor doing Rick in Rick and Morty is. He’s also the voice of Morty !

  2. I feel like GCR is to blame for the sudden and precipitous decline in the length of MPW episodes. First he doesn’t show up at all, and Jason, Karl and Andy whiz through a 54-minute lark that would barely count as the mini-reviews portion of a standard MPW episode. Then GCR comes back, but it’s still harvest so he hasn’t seen (almost) anything and stops talking completely (or maybe only mostly?) after the mini-reviews are done. Come on, brother. Start stirring the pot again!

I did crack up briefly when GCR wanted wanted to discuss Nocturnal Animals, but no one else had every followed up on his initial strong recommendation. I feel like there was an unusually high degree of frustration and [male reproductive organ]blocking on this episode. GCR didn’t get to discuss Nocturnal Animals because nobody else had seen it. Andy didn’t get to discuss Season 2 of Fargo because nobody else had seen it. The listeners didn’t get to discover the ending of Season 1 of Ozark for themselves because everybody else had seen it. (Can a brother get a spoiler alert?) And nobody got to discuss Flatliners or Battle of the Sexes because Andy hadn’t actually seen either of them. (Although that was funny, too, in its way.)

Come to the meetup, Andy. Just tell any listeners you meet that your name is Karl, and then instead of wanting to punch you, everyone will want to buy you a drink. Then you can point to Karl and say, “That’s Andy, over there,” and people will go punch Karl.

  3. MPW Episode 259: The One Where Andy Becomes a Professional Wrestler.

Just stopping by to thank GCR for his Rick & Morty recommendation. I started watching a few weeks back thanks to recommendations on previous episodes, and I’m so happy that this show exists.

Meeseeks and Destroy is one of the funniest episodes of television, animated or otherwise, that I have ever seen.

    Keep up the good work!!

  4. Hey gang. I was excited to see that “Train to Busan” is playing on Netflix and tried to boot it up this afternoon. It’s in Korean.? No subtitles.? So.? Did you all watch it that way?

    • Hi Jenifer!
Great to meet you this weekend. Thanks for attending the meetup! (It’s more than we can say for Andy…)

Yes, “Train to Busan” is a South Korean film, and I watched it with subtitles. Check your settings on Netflix: You should be able to add the subtitles, though I’m surprised they weren’t present already. Great film. You’ll have a blast!

  5. I’m really bummed that I couldn’t make it to Utah this past weekend. I was playing it by ear, and might have driven there on a whim and crashed the party, but that weekend was sandwiched in between two other trips this fall, so ultimately I had to bail and catch up on some stuff at home. I assume you all had a great time, eh?

I have also been a bit out of the loop here, lately. Still watching and enjoying movies, but I felt I needed to cut back on some of the peripheral stuff related to that, meaning movie podcasts I listen to (MPW is still one of my keepers, though I’m having to skip through some stuff here and there to stay caught up), and with commenting/responding about movie stuff on different forums like this. So if you thought I was too much of a blathering idiot (understandable), you’ll probably get a little less of that here going forward.

Just too many things to keep up with, and I’ve been spending time working on some music projects and also really digging the VR system I picked up recently (Oculus Rift). It’s an amazing and mind-blowing experience every time I play around in there. I’ve seen some media articles talking about how VR is a flash-in-the-pan and dying and so forth. I say “pish posh.” It is the future, and definitely growing, and incredibly cool in many ways. The Star Trek holodeck is here, essentially. Rejoice. It also is the beginning of what I would describe as “putting you into the movie,” with certain games and experiences, so I think it will also have some connections and interest for cinephiles going forward.

Anyway, from recent viewings, I loved Blade Runner: 2049 (might be the best completely unwarranted sequel ever – 9), and really liked Gerald’s Game (8) and A Ghost Story (8.5). The HBO Spielberg documentary is also a must-see. I also finally caught up with seeing A Cure for Wellness and quite enjoyed that (well, “enjoyed” might not be the right word to attach to that experience). That was an 8.5 for me.

Speaking of VR and Spielberg, I saw the trailer for Ready Player One before Blade Runner, and that looks amazingly good. Can’t wait for that next year. And I think I’ll appreciate it better now having dived into the VR world. The first time I saw that trailer a few months back, I thought, hmm okay, pretty cool looking. But this time it was like, ohhhhhh yeah. I get it now. I never read that book, and know little about the story, but I suspect it’s somewhat dystopian and a warning of the dangers of the world being immersed in VR. Yeah, I get that as a possibility, but I also think the positive applications and implications of VR are astounding and should outweigh the negative. Famous last words? 😀
