Movie Podcast Weekly Ep. 251: Atomic Blonde (2017) and A Ghost Story (2017) and Jason’s Birthday Bash: MPW’s Top 11-20 Favorite Movies

Episode 251 - A Ghost Story

Here is one of Jason’s all-time favorite episode of Movie Podcast Weekly… In Episode 251, we are joined by one of our foremost guest favorites, William Rowan Jr. (of The Sci-Fi Podcast). He helps us with our Feature Reviews of Atomic Blonde (2017) and A Ghost Story (2017). But the Main Event of this show is Jason’s Big (Belated) Birthday Bash: MPW’s Top 11-20 All-Time Favorite Movies! This is a must-listen episode because it is the first time you will hear the Top 10 All-Time Favorite Movies of both Geek Cast Ry and William Rowan Jr. (In fact, it’s an MPW Exclusive because William Rowan Jr. has never formally revealed his Top 10 anywhere else before!) Ryan also gives you a simple way to make his Christmas shopping list this year, and it pertains to “Die Hard” (1988). Join us!

And as noted in the preface… this episode contains major plot spoilers for the Coen Brothers’ 1996 feature film, “Fargo,” as well as for Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather: Part II” from 1974, and of course, for M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Sixth Sense” from 1999. And these spoilers occur during yet another debate about spoilers. So, if you don’t want to be spoiled for those films, you can skip over this section by looking at the time stamps in the show notes below.

If you’re new to our show… Movie Podcast Weekly typically features four hosts — Jason, Andy, Karl and Geek Cast Ry — along with frequent guests. We give you our verdicts on at least one new movie release from the current year that’s currently playing in theaters, as well as several mini reviews of whatever we’ve been watching lately. New episodes release every single week!

  1. Jay,
How is Children of Men the best movie of the oughts and yet The Village is your all time favourite movie? Aren’t they both from the oughts?
I also need to re-visit Master and Commander, I have only seen it once when it came out. I remember thinking it was ok but not fantastic. I would like to try it again though.

  2. I haven’t listened yet (still way behind on the epic Dunkirk episode), but it looks like I’m higher on Atomic Blonde than you guys. I loved that. Charlize kicked ass throughout, cast was excellent, and the story was better and more interesting than John Wick. I gave it a 9.

WR Jr., did you really call that an “Avoid??” Duuuude, you’re not my best friend anymore. And I may have to transfer J’s cinema hating badge over to you. 😀

  3. I’m curious if anyone feels indifferent towards Andy? Personally, I assume that everyone falls into two camps when it comes to Andy. You either love him and find his zany actions hilarious, which makes him the best part of the show or you think he’s a total waste of time and you’re wondering why Jay is still bothering to put him on his shows after all of these years.

  4. I first watched Napoleon Dynamite on pay per view the year it came out. I thought it was the worst movie I’d ever seen. Years later, a lot had happened in my life: love, heartbreak, travel, education, growth. Also, I had seen Napoleon Dynamite multiple times, and I now loved it.

    Andy is my Napoleon Dynamite.

  5. Ry, I gotta back you on “12 Angry Men” from 1997. It is a great movie. I have a soft spot for the original (which likely makes my Top 20), but the 1997 version is right up there. If Andy’s rules apply I would let it share the # alongside the 1957 version.

  6. Hi All,
Update on MPW: (Audience rolls eyes, Jay completely understands…)
We’ll be releasing Episode 252 this week.

And then on Monday, we’ll record our current show, Episode 256. We will just release it on time during its current record week, so we can get back on schedule again.

Meanwhile, we still have Episodes 253 through 255 already recorded, and I will release them as soon as possible.

But the important thing is, we’ll be back on a current weekly schedule again.

As always, thanks for your patience!
    – Jay

    • Jay, just give up on the weekly schedule. It has never worked and it just causes you stress, which in turn causes more delays. Make it easy on yourself and just release when ready.

    • Jay, I don’t know who this “Juan” character is, but I admire your ironclad commitment to the weekly schedule. Even when the weekly schedule is maybe a bit catastrophically behind. It makes me think of the following movie dialogue snippet that I’m pretty sure is universally true of all artistic endeavors, at all times and in all places:

“Mr. Fennyman, allow me to explain about the [podcasting] business. The natural condition is one of insurmountable obstacles on the road to imminent disaster.”
      “So what do we do?”
“Nothing. Strangely enough, it all turns out well.”
      “How?”
      “I don’t know. It’s a mystery.”
