  1. Didn’t you only recently watch Blade Runner Ryan? I’m pretty sure you said something similar to me like “i’ve always meant to watch it”. So do you hate movies Ryan? Lol.
Mobster movies isn’t my favourite genre either but I will make sure I at least watch the first Godfather movie this week and let you know what I think.
I think I am with Ryan about spoilers for old movies though. I wouldn’t do it but I wouldn’t be mad if you spoil a movie like the Godfather. It has been around for years and most people have seen it. I always ask someone if they have seen a movie before I start talking about it, but that’s just me.

I watched Trick r Treat last night with my wife and we had a blast. Like everyone has been saying, it is a really fun movie to watch and I will be watching it every Halloween from now on.

I watched Interstellar again this week too. I liked it even better than the first time I saw it. This movie is a 10 out of 10 to me. I love everything about this movie. I listened to your reviews straight after I watched it and you were definitely too low with your rating Jay. I got sucked into the movie completely and I got carried along for the ride. Rarely do I get so absorbed in a movie that nothing can take me out of it. I couldn’t stop talking about it to my wife afterwards. This movie completely wowed me which is also rare for a second watch for me.

I also saw Filth this week. Thanks Jason, awesome movie. It got pretty crazy in parts but I loved it.

I watched The Descent again this week too. Very creepy monsters and that situation is a really frightening one for me. I couldn’t think of anything worse than caving / spelunking, then you throw in those really scary monsters, no thanks. Is part 2 worth watching? I recorded it on cable this week.

The last thing I saw was The Cell with Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Lopez. It was pretty far out there and different which can be a good thing sometimes but not in this case in my opinion. It is worth watching just for the horse scene (you will know what I am talking about if you have seen the movie). It is definitely worth watching once, it looks amazing too. Vincent Denofrio was great, Vince Vaughn was good too but I wouldn’t watch it a second time.

Keep up the great work guys.

  2. Happy Halloween, y’all!

Speaking of which, I went to a special screening of HALLOWEEN the other night, which was fun to see on a big screen. I saw it probably a dozen times as a teenager in the early 80’s, so there was some major nostalgia to see it now. It holds up quite well as a suspenseful scare flick, and John Carpenter’s music score, though repetitive, is incredibly effective. The audience audibly laughed at some of the dumb horror tropes that come into play near the end in the climactic “killer chasing the protagonist” scenes, but it occurred to me that they probably wouldn’t have seemed so egregious if it wasn’t for every horror film after Halloween copying them.

Have I mentioned BLACK MIRROR here before? Probably. But Netflix just added six new episodes, essentially doubling the previous count. This show is SO SO SO GOOD, you guys. It’s essentially like The Twilight Zone, but from the perspective and setting of where we are or will soon be with technology and/or social media. Or perhaps more about how human nature remains the same, despite how our technology changes.

Here’s the thing, though… Each episode is completely standalone and is very different in subject and style. Most are disturbing in some way or another, but some are darker or more twisted than others. I’ve had a few people say they didn’t really care for the very first episode, which is about the Prime Minister of England being forced to have sex with a pig. I still think it’s a good episode for what it ends up saying about society, but it’s one of my least favorites of the 13 shows, and I think it was kind of dumb for them to lead with that subject. So I would recommend either skipping that one to begin with, or watch it with the understanding that others will be *very* different from that. My favorites are “White Christmas,” a special 90 minute episode featuring John Hamm, “Fifteen Million Merits,” and “San Junipero” and “Shut Up and Dance” from the new season.

J, thanks for the recommendation of This is Us. I’m wary of adding any new shows (though I love the new comedy The Good Place, and Westworld rocks), but that sounds up my alley. I’d heard good buzz already, but yours puts it over the top for me to at least give it a look. In return, spin at least a couple episodes of Black Mirror, as I think you’ll really love that series. In fact, that’s something you could cover on HMP, as most of the episodes involve some type of “horror,” technological or psychological.

    • Yes! Black Mirror is the best new (sort of) show on Netflix! I love Nosedive and Playtest episodes as well. I think Jason and Andy would really love this show.

Also, I’m sure no one here watches this show, but “Atlanta” is truly the smartest show on television and analyzes culture better than any show I’ve seen (not named Black Mirror). You all should give at least two episodes a try.

  3. Even though I knew that GCR hadn’t seen “The Accountant” (no rating given in the show notes), I still thought he was being awfully quiet during the review. If Andy is silent for a while during the show, then I always just assume that he’s either ignoring the conversation and looking something up online (perhaps calculating the buoyancy of an unladen swallow), or fake pouting/boycotting and looking something up online. But it’s odd for Ry to ever just drop out entirely. Here’s hoping it was just a farming emergency, or perhaps a particularly engrossing vlog recap of the latest episode of “Teen Mom.”

I was mildly surprised to hear Karl take a dump on “Timeless.” My wife loves it, and through the first three episodes I think it’s decently clever and has some intriguing potential. There’s some blandness in the mix, but it’s a reasonably diverting sci-fi yarn, sort of like if someone had decided to make a TV series out of the Ray Bradbury short story “A Sound of Thunder” (in a conceptual, more than strictly narrative sense). We also watched the first two episodes of “Designated Survivor,” but haven’t been rushing to stay caught up since then. We may already be done with that one, like Jay and Natalie, and just haven’t realized it yet.

I thoroughly enjoyed GCR’s bit with the titles of new releases. I correctly identified all four of his invented titles before they were revealed, but I thought he had also made up “Jack Goes Home” (and was suspicious of “National Bird”). I think “Colorado Rain” definitely should be a movie, and I’m a little surprised to find no evidence that someone, somewhere, at some point, has already used “The Unfathomable” as a movie title.

    • Jay: You’re totally right about “This Is Us,” brother. My wife and I had seen and liked the pilot, but we weren’t 100 percent sold. After hearing your review, I decided it was time to get serious. We watched the next two episodes earlier tonight, and now we’re all in. Great writing, tremendous acting, lovely low-key storytelling. Very authentic and touching.

When “This Is Us” hits its midseason hiatus and you need something to fill the void, then give “Parenthood” (the NBC series that ran from 2010 to 2015) a whirl if you haven’t seen it already. For anyone who likes “This Is Us,” “Parenthood” will totally be your jam.

      • I watched the first This is Us yesterday and loved it. I had even been spoiled of the twist near the end, but it played out in a way that was better than I had heard. I was a fan of Parenthood, and this definitely fills that gap, but also feels different enough from that.

Cody, have you seen Men of a Certain Age? It was a short-lived TNT (or maybe TBS) show, starring Ray Romano, Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula. Had a similar vibe to Parenthood, and was quite good. I was super impressed with Ray Romano on that show, and he brought his chops from there over to Parenthood. I haven’t seen it show up yet on Netflix or Amazon or Hulu, but it probably will, and is well worth the watch. Only two 10-12 episode seasons, so not a huge commitment.

And Gabe, I keep hearing about how great Atlanta is (er, the show, not the city,) so I’ll definitely give that a spin soon.

        • I remember the show, but have never seen any of it, though I do typically enjoy all three of the leads. I have almost zero knowledge of cable network shows generally (it was TNT that did “Men of a Certain Age”), because I’ve never had cable. 🙁 I know some of them eventually end up available via streaming sites, and I do get both Netflix and Amazon Prime, but usually I’ve forgotten about [Name of Show] by the time it crosses over to streaming media.

  4. It is so rare that I listen to this podcast these days, due to the clown car effect. Maybe 2-3 times in the last year. I finally tuned in to listen to your review of Masterminds bc I know the writers and of course Karl decides that the worst thing about the film is the writers. Haha. So, I have one interesting thing to contribute to the show, but hear that William Rowan Jr is on the next show and wonder if it might come up. It doesn’t come up directly, but actually comes up ORGANICALLY!!! The director and writer of Humble Pie (the Billy Baldwin film that was discussed) are the two writers of Masterminds that I mentioned above. AMAZING! And then William doesn’t mention it. Oh well. I guess I’ll go contribute to The Villa now.

  5. Congrats to GCR on the Cubs finally breaking through. “Back to the Future II” was only off by one year. 🙂 Long-awaited and much-deserved victory for the city of Chicago. Sometimes the best regular-season team in the league goes all the way and it’s just that simple.
