Movie Podcast Weekly Ep. 206: Sully (2016) and Imperium (2016) and Downriver (2016)

Episode 206

In this heated edition of Movie Podcast Weekly, Jason compels Andy to “refuse to participate” from his Mini Reviews onward, up until the point where Andy eventually hangs up the Skype call. Welcome to Episode 206. This kind of episode is pretty typical for us. Also in this show, we bring you Feature Reviews of Clint Eastwood’s Sully and Daniel Radcliffe’s Imperium and an Australian film called Downriver. The day we recorded this episode, Sept. 12, 2016, was Ryan’s 33rd birthday. Happy birthday, Ryan! Thanks for listening.

If you’re new to our show… Movie Podcast Weekly typically features four hosts — Jason, Andy, Karl and Geek Cast Ry — along with frequent guests. We give you our verdicts on at least one new movie release from the current year that’s currently playing in theaters, as well as several mini reviews of whatever we’ve been watching lately. New episodes release every single week!

  1. Good grief, J. This putting podcasts out on time thing is totally throwing me off. I’m still not completely done with 203 yet (mostly because I have a hard time listening to myself blather). So now I’ve listened to some, but not all, of 4 MPW shows. You need to get behind again so we can all catch up! 🙂

Ryan, happy birthday, beard brother! And for your birthday, I will promise not to bug you about watching The Walk ever again… after this time.

If you could get a sense of what it actually felt like to be Phillipe on top of the WTC, without being in that kind of danger, wouldn’t you? That’s the difference between Man on Wire and The Walk. It also has a lot of creative energy that puts the whole story into more of a heist narrative, and is a nice love letter to NYC and the WTC. It really stands on its own and has what I would consider a powerful inspirational takeaway (whether you’re religious or atheist or anything in between). Watching Man on Wire was like wow, how cool and impressive. The Walk was a personally inspiring adventure that took me along for the experience. Both excellent and both must-see films. Okay, that’s it. If you still refuse to watch it, I can shake the dust off my feet. 😛

I just checked out the recent documentary De Palma, which is Brian De Palma talking about his career, with some film clips included. But it’s really good. Like his films or not (I love a few, but not all), it’s worth it. A lot of insights into filmmaking, some fun anecdotes about Hollywood stuff, and an appreciation for a unique career in cinema. 8.5

  2. Hey Jay…The black and white version of Mad Max Fury Road comes out on bluray December 3…just in time for Christmas…Hope you get visited by the ghost of George Miller present and puts your Scrooge ass in its place…Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Everyone!!!

    • This is great news! According to George Miller its his preferred version of the movie. While I liked Fury Road a lot, I felt the Technicolor explosion of the theatrical version was a little distracting and undermined the gritty world of Max. The originals were slightly washed out and the inherent cheapness of the productions added grit and character. Because I love Max and his world I set up a “de-saturated” setting on my TV just for this movie and for me the film plays better. Not only does it hide some of the obvious CGI, which I was not expecting at all (due to insistence from that liar George Miller that “it was all done for real!”), it brings back some of the grit. While I realize that de-saturated is the go-to look for post-apocalyptic films and Miller was trying to avoid that trope, there’s a reason it’s a trope. It conveys in a second the sheer hopelessness and despair of living in such an environment. Normally I respect a director’s intent and prefer their vision but not in this case. I can’t wait to own the official B&W version so I can amend that last statement.

  3. Hope everyone has a splendid time this weeked…I will be there in spirit…and by the way…Sorry Karl but Dazed and Confused rules…I have the poster on my living room wall…It was a game changer for me…

  4. Re: Mini-review of Wild:

Sorry, J, but I have to completely side with Andy on this: a 3-grade for Wild really is ridiculous. Regardless of “personal enjoyment level”, I don’t think a reasonably objective reviewer that watched this without preconceived expectations could rate this less than a 5, bare minimum. The film clearly achieves what it sets out to do fairly well, and Reese Witherspoon is excellent in it (and BTW, as someone that has been on many hiking/camping trips, *many* newbies over-pack their backpacks – it happens all of the time – and standing up with an overweight pack is much harder to do than just walking with it on your back – those are just facts).

So J – I thoroughly enjoy your podcasting, but here’s where I have to break your reviewing balls for a second: I think you sometimes let your expectations of a film influence your review/grade, and then as a backlash, rate something too low to be credible (perhaps leading to your ‘hating the cinema’ reputation).

Here’s another example: your review of The Nice Guys.

Since your podcast co-hosts Andy (and then Ryan) have watched and highly rated that film, you’ve been attempting to walk back your harsh review in Ep.#191, saying to Andy (in Ep.#205) that, “I liked it fine; just fine”, and, “I thought it was good; I mean it was fine.”

No, no, no. Sorry, but you don’t get to revise history (when it’s recorded for posterity) – you actually said (in Ep.#191), “I kind of hated this movie; it was a huge disappointment”, and, “I actively didn’t like it; I couldn’t wait to get out of the theater”, then you rated it a 4 and “Avoid”.

Again, I think it was due to your “expectations” of a Shane Black movie, as opposed to an honest review of the movie that was presented to you.

I think to break you of this bad habit, you must re-watch any movie you rate lower than a 5 (and has an RT score of 90 or above) within a month. 🙂

  5. Re: The Wire as a “snapshot” of a period/place.

If so, that snapshot is of *now*. There have been (and continue to be) many articles written about how The Wire is as relevant, or more so, today than when it first aired 14 years ago. Here are just two (of many):

    http://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2015/01/06/375147386/rewatching-the-wire-classic-crime-drama-seems-written-for-today

    http://hiddenremote.com/2016/01/20/sad-horrible-enduring-relevance-wire/

  6. Finally had a chance to see “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” I wouldn’t say it was amazing, but very well done and a nice change of pace comedy. It seems like most comedies in the past few years use raunchiness as an easy out, rather than having any originality or relatable characters that you can empathize with. “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” is not an all time great, but a gem for 2016. I think it was a little more than a grumpy man and child movie. I thought the movie illustrated the relationships between grumpy husband and wife, foster parents and child, and also people and nature very well. I felt like every character had a backstory that was interesting and I wanted to know more about each. Sam Neil, Julian Dennison, and the actress that played the mother were all great.

I hope to see more comedies like this in production rather than movies like “Sausage Party”, “The Night Before”, “Neighbors”, “This is the End” and the “The Interview”. I will have to check out more movies from Taika Waititi.
