Movie Podcast Weekly Ep. 193: Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016) and The Finest Hours (2016)

Episode 193

Welcome to The Ryan and Jason Show — a special two-hander episode — where there’s no Karl or Andy in sight. (But then, there’s never really Karl or Andy insight… Har har. Get it?) This is Movie Podcast Weekly, Episode 193. In this podcast, you’ll hear Feature Reviews for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping and The Finest Hours.

Also in this episode, Geek Cast Ry and Jay talk about their concerns for the narrative of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” according to some ominous rumors. GCR also discusses his predictions about the quality of “Warcraft” and whether it will unseat “Silent Hill” (2006) as the best video game-to-film adaptation. They also discuss a tremendous new must-listen podcast called LORE. Thanks for joining us (since Karl and Andy couldn’t be bothered to do so).

If you’re new to our show… Movie Podcast Weekly typically features four hosts — Jason, Andy, Karl and Geek Cast Ry — along with frequent guests. We give you our verdicts on at least one new movie release from the current year that’s currently playing in theaters, as well as several mini reviews of whatever we’ve been watching lately. New episodes release every single week!

  1. Don’t listen to Jason review on turtles 2 , he don’t know how to have fun lol just playing , well with the tmnt and transformers cross over that’s not happening , because trAnsformers are crossing over with g.i joe , m.a.sk , mirconauts . They doing it in comic book form first

  2. Ack, now I need to add The Detour to the list of “shows I need to watch but may never get around to.”

In return, here’s one for you guys… The Detectorists. It’s a low-key BBC series about two guys (Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook) who are amateur “detectorists” (i.e., people who use metal detectors to find things), and are looking for a rumored Saxon treasure in the English countryside. I’ll emphasize the “low key,” as it’s not uproarious, but it is quite amusing and charming, and a fun glimpse into a group of hobbyists (they belong to a detectorist club and have rivals who are trying to first claim the Saxon find). The first season (six half hours episodes) is on Netflix, and the second is available on the Acorn TV site. I didn’t realize there even was a second season until just today, but thought the first one ended the entire series in an interesting bittersweet kind of way. Turns out that was a tease for the next season. Anyway, definitely worth a look on Netflix.

  3. The Detour is a great show! Highly recommended!

Sounds crazy, but maybe Jay’s infatuation with Megan Fox was because she was pregnant. It’s that special glow! Ha! Ha!

    Thanks for the Lore tip.

Has anyone watched Damien? I thought it was a quality show!

    • Someone buy Ryan a peanut buster parfait because his recommendation of The Detour ended up being great. Frankly, it’s way too good to just be some sitcom on TBS. I was just expecting a show good enough to be fine to pass the time, but it ended up being one of the better sitcoms of 2016. The show does a great job at being racy and pushing the limits without it feeling as if they’re just doing it for the sake of doing it (AKA 2 Broke Girls).

      • Why would you watch that, Sal? (2 Broke Girls). Let me rephrase that, why would anyone watch that?*

Steven, I’ve read great things about Damien. It’s in my queue but more towards the bottom since I’ve yet to see Hannibal, Penny Dreadful, Salem, Bates Motel, The X-Files, Twin Peaks, American Horror Story, and The Strain. All of which I’ve heard great things about, some more than others. I’m making an effort to catch up on my tv shows, but now I’m falling behind on movies… (sigh) how do you do it, Sal? Tell me your secret.

        *Besides the obvious (Kat Dennings).

  4. Jason, why do you hate the cinema? As I think I’ve noted in this space before, the teaser trailer for “Rogue One” is awesome. And GeekCast Ry is 100 percent RIGHT. When the Imperial alarm klaxon starts blaring, that just makes the whole thing better. (The talk of reshoots makes my blood run cold. I PRAY that it’s only to make a little room for Alden Ehrenreich.)

Also, the Rosie Mac “Little Mermaid” project is not connected to Disney. There are a couple of live-action “Little Mermaid” films in development (at least according to IMDb), but Disney is not involved in any of them. Scanning back to last week’s discussion of this topic, why do I get the distinct impression that Emma Watson isn’t good enough for you guys because of her cup size? Karl came right out and said as much (more or less) with his Christina Hendricks casting suggestion. And that seems to be the No. 1 argument in favor of Ms. Mac as well. What is wrong with you people?! Belle is not some curvaceous sexpot spilling out of her poor provincial peasant blouse. She’s a pretty village girl who is kind, sensible and loves to read. And let’s all remember that the hottest Disney Princess is: bit.ly/_I_WIN #neverforget

The best video game movie ever made is “Wreck-It Ralph.” Boom! TRUTH.

    • “The best video game movie ever made is “Wreck-It Ralph.” Boom! TRUTH

Haha best comment so far. I have to agree with Cody. Even though the Silent Hill movie is probably one of the better video game adaptations, it still wasn’t great and it’s far from being the best video game movie ever. That title belongs to Wreck-It Ralph, the only video game movie with any real heart and an honest love for video games that translates excellently to the big screen.

      #truff

    • I also agree with Cody about your dismissal of Emma Watson. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but to me, Emma is way prettier than Christina Hendricks or Rosie Mac. No offense to anyone, especially the lovely ladies, but both Christina and Rosie have a very distinctly sexual look to them that I don’t think is a right fit for Belle.

With regards to the Imperial alarm klaxon (is that what we’re officially calling it?), I’m with Ryan and Cody. It absolutely kicks things into gear and adds a sense of panic that goes really well with the visuals. I mean, this is a team of people infiltrating the enemy base, why wouldn’t there be alarms going off? It totally makes sense. Does the Imperial alarm klaxon sound almost like a chorus of high pitch voices? Because it does to me and I love it!

      • That’s what *I’m* calling it, Juan, so yeah, that probably makes it official. I could be mistaken, but I’m pretty sure it’s a legacy sound (like Artoo’s many beeps and whistles) that’s appeared in other “Star Wars” films before this one. It might even be the same sound that’s going off in the hallways of the Death Star at the end of “Star Wars.” (I’m too lazy to check.)

I think Emma Watson is one of the best people in her age group that Disney could have chosen for Belle. She’ll be great.

Someday we should totally do a podcast called Cody and Juan Talk About Awesome Animated Movies. I bet at least 5 or 6 people would listen to it. But not Josh, because he hates Pixar, and probably not Jay, either, because he hates the cinema.

  5. For me, Finding Nemo was a 10/10, so there was a high bar to measure against. Finding Dory was great for a while, and then had nice moments here and there, but also had a long stretch where stuff just kind of happened… and I didn’t really feel anything much. The octopus was okaaaay, but not that amazing or memorable of a character, really. I did like what the beluga whale ended up doing, and the resolution was pretty touching. Still, underwhelming, and a 6.5.

Side note of annoyance about something… I got the Blu-Ray for 10 Cloverfield Lane and watched it with my girls last night (cool to see and hear their reactions at the pivotal parts). But the back of the Blu-Ray case has a picture that is, in essence, a pretty big spoiler. Also, the description on the back is a little bit spoilery. So, a heads up to avoid looking at the case if you pick that up but haven’t seen it yet.

  6. Late to the party on this episode, but I thought it was a lot of fun. As much as I like Andy and Karl, you two held the fort exceptionally well.

  7. Everybody Wants Some!! is in my top 5 of 2016 for sure…Dazed and Confused is in my top 5 movies of all time and this is a welcome return to form for Richard Linklater…I adore this movie and my love for it will grow after repeat viewing just like Dazed…
