  1. In regards to the IMDb TV list, I think awareness of the TV shows plays a big role in the rankings as well. In order to get ranked, you need regular visitors to give the show a rating in order to get ranked. My theory is this, a show like Planet Earth is not going to be looked up by the average Joe. As a result, you likely only have fans of the show looking Planet Earth on IMDb. It only makes sense that they’d give a high rating.

A show like The Office likely gets far more page views and it’s visitors are a greater variety, whether they love the show or hate it. In addition, you have to assume that the longer a show goes on, the greater the chance of visitors giving lower ratings. Take Dexter for example. Had IMDb created a top 250 when they were still in it’s first four seasons, the show would likely be ranked higher in the top 250 list. It also explains why a new show like Better Call Saul is so high, despite being so new. Only one season, people dug it, so *Boom* it’s ranked far higher than people would have expected.

So yeah, there’s questionable placements on the top 250, but it makes sense when you factor in the type of people that would be visiting the IMDb page of the various TV shows.

      • Which makes sense as there’s less time for problems to arise (IE. Bad seasons, greater exposure to normal non-fans, ect).

It also means it’s not going to feel dated, unlike shows from decades ago. Look how far back classic sitcoms are. Out of 250 entries, there’s only one sitcom (I Love Lucy) from before the 70’s.

    • Thanks, Dino. As you and the other horror fans have probably noticed by now, I just barely scratch the surface for new horror releases on MPW. I’m very sensitive to providing a lot of duplicate commentary for the crossover listeners who faithfully listen to both MPW and HMP. So, my horror reviews (of new releases) on this podcast are always very general and not very in-depth. I try to provide the MPW audience with a sense of the film, and I move on. The real analysis comes on HMP for new horror flicks. (Case in point: The Visit.).

But for all the MPW fans (like Juan, I think it was…) who have recently stated that they’d like more in-depth discussion among two or more hosts on MPW’s Feature Reviews… We’ve got a very special surprise coming up for you next in Ep. 158:

7 hosts reviewing “Sicario” and “The Martian” in-depth! Join us! : )
      Thanks,
      J

      • Hell yes! That’s what I’m talking about, Jay. Yes, it was me who asked for more interactions, but I believe Dino also requested more in-depth reviews. Seven hosts uh? That might be a bit overkill, but I like your bold move. I like it a lot. Not only that, but I actually saw both of those movies this weekend, so I’m excited to discuss. Spoiler alert, I liked both of them a great deal.

        • That said, I’m totally fine with your short surface reviews of horror movies over here, simply because you do cover them more in-depth over at HMP. Like you said, it’s expected at this point. Still looking forward to hearing your general thoughts, though, since we won’t get the in-depth discussion over at HMP until November.

          • Since you have commented on this a couple of times now, I’ll pull back the curtain a little bit on the production of MPW:

Despite how it seems, the occasional, rushed nature of MPW never comes from me. Not that I recall. It’s always a result of “external pressures” or gloomy storm clouds looming over me largely… I’m going to name names now:

Namely, Karl (who has a bedtime and gets cranky precisely at the two-hour mark) ha ha. I know you’ve heard him. You can set your watch by his comment: “OK, we need to get movin’…” ha ha. Man, I love Karl, and I don’t want the Irishman mad at me! : ) (Nah, I understand, because Karl has to work early the next day, and I also feel bad about Ryan on the East Coast. He gets three to four hours of sleep on podcast nights.)

And my wife: She thinks MPW should be bi-weekly and one hour tops with zero editing, and HMP should either not exist or be only bi-weekly… Yikes! : ) Many of you are married. You understand. Enough said. ha ha

Oh, and recently, it has been a matter of having enough storage space on our media host provider. MPW and HMP share the same provider account, financed by yours truly (and the very kind donations of a few of our listeners). Those who donate have literally helped facilitate the release of these podcasts, and I love you all for it!

These epic, lengthy episodes of HMP (of late) have taken up a lot of space and have encroached over onto our MPW space.

Hence, the mindful runtime of our MPW episodes of late.

And admittedly, due to my own failings, it turns out that I’m apparently terrible at selling T-shirts, and I hate to harass and badger people for donations all the time, so you can begin to see the various external “studio pressures” that have clamped down on our runtime…

So, all of the above are the true reasons why the show seems rushed sometimes.

But I’m not complaining, my friends. I just explained all of this above because you had mentioned it. I keep pressing forward and producing podcasts because I love it, despite these restrictions.

Thanks for the feedback. And thank you for even caring! : ) I appreciate hearing your comments. You’re the best.
            J

            • That’s fair, J. I hope I made it clear that I still love the show, I just think it would work better if the feature reviews were more center stage.

And, yeah, I know it’s Karl.

              *****

Honestly, though, it’s not so much about the length of the reviews as it is the interaction (or lack thereof). In a week where each of you see a different movie, there’s no opportunity for interaction or meaningful discussion about a film. I know that sometimes you’ll try to ask questions about a movie you haven’t seen (which is appreciated), but that’s certainly not the same.

This is a problem that I feel is born out of your desire to review as many new releases in a year as possible.

              Just my 2 cents.

          • “But just for the record, Juan, my 7-year-old boy could beat you up.”

I can’t take this comment seriously seeing how you think children aren’t scary nor are able to pose a real life threat to adults 😉

        • With a four-host panel, one guest is generally my limit, because five is already a crowd, as it is…

          But —

For tonight, we have our usual four Clown Car drivers (Jay, Andy, Karl, Ryan). And then we had scheduled film critic extraordinaire, Cody Clark. He is five.

And then Josh Ligairi (whom we all love) said he saw both movies — as did his wife, Rachel, who has some sort of expertise in the socio-political atmosphere surrounding “Sicario.” Who can pass up Rachel?

And, since both film are so remarkable (which is to say, discussion-worthy), I felt like it just had to be done.

So, yes, I hate having seven people on the show — if, for no other reason, it is always an editing nightmare. I don’t usually believe in it, but when I’ve got this Magnificent Seven (well … Magnificent Six and me), then I couldn’t resist…

We record tonight (Monday, Oct. 5). And if you’re the praying type, I hope you will pray for us, because it’s going to be fireworks, I think… Through some brief text exchanges, Karl has already threatened to come over to my house and punch me in front of my children… So, it might get ugly…

I’m just worried we’re going to have another “Lego Movie” situation where some people can’t look beyond their infatuation to acknowledge some of the film’s (*few*) shortcomings…

You see where I’m going with this.
          J

          • OMG! Jay, if you gave The Martian a low score (high score in your scale), I will join Karl on his punching activity, but I will take it one step further and punch your family as well (see what I did there?)*

By the way, I don’t consider myself well versed in the cartel wars, but I’m very aware of what’s been happening for a long time in my beloved country. I can’t wait to hear what Rachel has to say about it.

*Calm down everyone, it’s a movie reference 😉

          • No, no, no. I am not giving “The Martian” a low score at all. I loved it.

But just for the record, Juan, my 7-year-old boy could beat you up. Trust me.

            He’s Batman.
            J

      • J – It seems like you and I come in around the same place on THE GREEN INFERNO. I agree with pretty much everything you said. Looking forward to the deeper discussion over at HMP next month.

  2. Karl’s criticisms towards Gravity are pretty funny considering he gives a HUGE pass to all of his Star Trek crap that he loves. Just saying. I love you Karl, but come on, man!

    • In Karl’s defence Star Trek has kind of a pulpy vibe to it whereas “Gravity” seemed to have more of an emphasis on realism and contemporary science.

      • I see what you’re saying, David. Both are still science fiction movies though (and one of them a show). Gravity never claimed to be based in real life physics so why does it get to be on Karl’s bad side? Just because it’s visually a more realistic looking film? It’s a terrible excuse to criticize a movie, which in and of itself, is make belief (most times). So are we now going to be critical of things that don’t work the way they are supposed to in real life like relationships, police work, governments, people?

  3. Hey Jay, do you still have the MP3’s to the Considering the Sequels podcast? A few of the episodes look interesting, but none of the links work in the CTS archive on this site.

  4. Ry (and anyone else who is interested in Marvel superhero stuff) –

I took my 5 y/o son to see Marvel Universe Live this past weekend. It was awesome. I’m not sure if the show has made its way through Indiana yet, but I would suggest checking it out. I think you and your little one(s) would love it.

p.s. the Blackhawks suck. Go Rangers!

    • I like it too, but I wish it would rotate and it wasn’t always Andy. Karl had some gold in this episode. Maybe have a few different phrases every once in a while?

        • I have a friend that spews gold all the time. I have a post-it notebook with me all the time and write down his phrases. Eventually, I’d like to put together a book full of his quotes. I’d like to do that for Jay, Karl, and Andy if it’s ok with them.

          Example quotes. These are verbatim:
“You know, I think I can tolerate rap better than death metal.”

“Why do you need 4K? You’re not a scientist or biologist?”

“I hate space! I don’t care for it.”

          I don’t know, I think they’re funny :/

  5. Karl really brought it in this episode. I enjoyed his fall TV preview, his disdainful review of “The Intern,” his discussion of the trip to see the aspen quakies, and his figurative giving a middle finger to the IMDb’s Top 250 television list. There’s no need to go all the way to Mt. Pleasant, however, to see a drive-in movie. The Redwood Drive-In Theatre in West Valley City is closed for the season, but that’s a great still-functioning drive-in theater in Salt Lake Valley.

    http://redwooddrivein.com/nowplaying/

Enjoyed Jay’s review of “The Green Inferno,” which mostly confirmed to me that I don’t ever need to seek it out. Good for Lorenza Izzo, though. She’s gotten some brutal reviews for “Knock Knock,” so it’s nice to know that she has a performance out there that cinema lovers can eat up. My favorite Andy moment of this podcast was his reaction to Jay asking Karl, “So Karl, are you going to see ‘The Green Inferno’?” That was some vintage Dr. Howell snark.

  6. Karl, how recording it all and skipping adverts differ from pirating? You don’t really think that the modest TV abbo covers it all, including artists fees…?

      • I know, I know. I think I’ve basically abandoned my 31 Days… just not enough time to pop in and/or watch a movie every day. I’ll probably pop in on the 31 Days from time to time when I actually see something, but I’m still trying to get around to my NoES re-watch so I can discuss the sequels. It hurts inside. #fomo

        • You know, I was going to give you a hard time for giving up but I just let it dawn on me that I’m just not going to be able to keep up. Crazy hours at work + increased time at the gym (to be able to eliminate Cody when the day comes) + resurrected interest in The Walking Dead + Upcoming trips = a dull, dull boy.

    • I assume Freddy Krueger offed Jay since he’s already killed Dr. Shock. Personally, I have Andy pegged as being next.

Any bets on who will be the final girl for the HMP/MPW/MSC/TSCP family?

          • I don’t know, guys. Station! had a good chance for sure, but ever since she stopped yelling out her name (STATION!), she’s lost some points. It makes me think that she already gave up :'(

Best case scenario, it’s a Mexican standoff a la Reservoir Dogs and everyone dies.

            • Then after the credits, Dr. Walking Dead walks up, expecting to do a rare podcast, but only finds bodies all over the place.
