  1. Let me be the first to say that Oscar sucks pretty hard. I’m not sure why you like it Jay. It’s terrible beyond redemption. It’s a 3/10 for me. That’s 3 out of 10, not three tenths haha 😉

  2. Yes, Freebirds is atrocious. And this is coming from an animation lover. Freebirds is sub-par at everything. Don’t even bother with it guys. It’s a 4/10 for me.

  3. Whoa, Jay! James Bond movies didn’t have any teeth until Daniel Craig? Are you totally dismissing License to Kill, which as I’ve mentioned before is the only movie in the franchise to receive a 15 rating in the UK for violent content. It definitely feels like there are stakes in that movie and on a much more personal and gritty level than the usual eccentric villain concocting a plot for world domination. James Bonds best friend Felix Leiter is fed to a shark and his new wife is murdered and the whole movie has a pretty dark and intense vibe. We see blood when people get shot, a guys head explodes in a decompression chamber, a chap falls into a big grinding machine and another character who is soaked in petrol is set on fire and burns alive. Don’t go glossing over my favourite Bond movie you fiend!

    – David

    • I stand corrected, David. I did overlook “License to Kill.” Perhaps I would have been up on all my Bond facts, if I had been doing my homework and revisiting all the films, instead of shirking my duties…

Sorry, David. I take it back.
      JP

      • Don’t worry Jason my friend. I was way more angry* with Andy this episode for his cynical treatment of Death Sentence but I feel like I’m always giving Andy a hard time these days so you were the scapegoat.

*And by “angry” I of course mean “mildly vexed in a jocular manner” because Andy’s great.

And so is Karl so I certainly hope that it’s true that he was just travelling while this episode was being recorded rather than decomposing in the desert.

  4. I hope geriatric Andy Howell of the future comes back in time just to give the current time-travel hating Andy Howell a good telling off.

  5. Been a while. Firstly, I’d like to acknowledge the podcast’s fearless leader, Jay, for his bravery in mentioning Oscar, Honey, Step Up 2 The Streets (I actually enjoyed this one too), and The Core.

Secondly, Josh, I find James Franco’s career path to be so interesting. I can’t wait to see what he’s doing next usually. It’s funny that Team America came up in comparison to Interior Leather Bar. I actually want to make another Team America-Franco film comparison. Have you guys heard about the controversy revolving his new Rogen-collab flick ‘The Interview’? Apparently North Korea is furious about its release, and they are threatening America with ‘war’ over its release. Didn’t Matt Stone and Trey Parker find themselves in very similar “peril” over the release of Team America and its depiction of Kim Jong Il? What are your thoughts on these films, the controversy and the overall subject, Josh?

    I Heart Huckabees – 7/10 (Rental)
    Manhattan Murder Mystery – 7.5 ( Rental )
    Death Sentence – 6 (Rental )
Die Another Day – 4.5 (Avoid)
    Honey – 1.5 for Jessica Alba ( Avoid )
    The Core – 4.5 ( Low-priority Rental )
    Attack the Block – 8 (High-Priority Rental)

    My Recommendations for the week:
300: Rise of an Empire – 6.5 (Rental) Not nearly as good as the first, but I love the depiction of women as leaders.
    Her – 8 (High-Priority Rental)
Maximum Overdrive – 2 [real score] / 6.5 [nostalgia/ guilty pleasure score] This little diddy is streaming on Netflix currently. The guys at filmsack reminded me of its existence. This was Stephen King’s one film he directed, and one that he himself has admitted he was coked out of his mind during the filming of. Watch it for the so-bad-it’s-good moments, the kills, and the AC/DC-riddled soundtrack.

    • Very much agree with you about Franco’s career B-Rye. Didn’t make the Interview/Team America connection, but that is very funny. I think the whole controversy is ridiculous (and I’m looking forward to the movie), but you obviously have to be somewhat concerned with a maniac like Kim Jong Un. Curious what the reaction will be, if anything. Hopefully nothing too serious.

Glad you somewhat liked Huckabees and Manhattan Murder Mystery. I think you are a bit low on those and very low on Her and Attack the Block, but you have more sense than Jason, at least.

Not as excited about the 300 sequel as you, but it had some nice moments.

  6. I’m still in the middle of this episode, but I have to jump in and back Jay on “Oscar.” Totally undervalued moment in Sly Stallone’s career. Farce is tricky, and there doesn’t usually seem to be much middle ground: Either it tickles your funny bone, or you want to beat something. So I get where Andy is coming from. And it’s been a good 20 years since the last time that I saw “Oscar” … but I remember it being a fine, breezy little romp (as well as a very deliberately constructed farce; again, not for everybody). Not a movie for the ages, but also not any kind of a disaster. Gem is good word for it, Jay. Stick to your guns, brother.
