Accordingly, on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, we’re proud to bring you our Top 10 Movies of 2014 episode! Jason, Andy, Karl and Josh will each have a Top 10 list. And this year, we’d like to also announce the top 10 list of the collective MPW audience! But we’ll need your feedback to do this!

    • You may very well win again, Juan… People have been bashful about submitting their Top 10 lists thus far, so any entrants will have a very good chance of winning … By the way, have you sent your Top 10 list yet? —J

      • If you want to win the blu-ray, you have to make the effort to get an entry.

I have started Jay, but I’ll probably send it last minute, because I still have tons of movies that I’m trying to work through. I know that sucks for you, but the more movies I watch, the better the list!

  1. First time leaving a comment I love the show I listen while I’m at work you guys are great listening to this podcast has brought back my love for movies and definitely has me revisiting certain movies from my youth Jason I have a question for you since I know you like horror movies have you ever checked out American horror story the TV show? If not I would really like you to check it out and maybe give some feedback Jessica lange and Sarah Paulson are in credible each season has a different theme with some of the same characters ie. Jessica and Sarah I watched the first season when it came out and loved it it is now on it’s 4th season the first was a haunted house which was good but when I saw season 2 which is based in a insane asylum OMG amazing thrills kills and just outright entertainment from the beginning please check out this series Jason you will be pleasantly surprised it’s streaming on Netflix

    • Olajuwon, thanks for writing! I have not checked out American Horror Story yet, I’m ashamed to say. I have always been more of a movie person than a TV person, especially horror TV. Until “The Walking Dead” (which I love), horror couldn’t be full-blown horror on television. But things are changing. I’ve been very curious about AHS. At some point (probably in 2015), we’re going to do a Horror Television themed episode on our sister show, Horror Movie Podcast http://horrormoviepodcast.com/ — and I’m sure I’ll be delving into AHS in preparation for that show. Thanks for writing!
      Jay

      • Jay, could you elaborate on what you mean about horror not being full-blown until The Walking Dead?

Are you talking levels of gore and violence? Because Tales From The Crypt had some extremely gory moments. Episodes like “Forever Ambergris” and “What’s Cookin’?” are definately “full-blown” in that department.

        • You’re right, David. That was a gross generalization. Wasn’t “Tales From the Crypt” aired on HBO? I realize the Horror TV we have now is also cable television, versus network stuff, but I was broadly referring to the content restrictions on TV, historically, versus the relative freedom of films. But you’re right. There are some bold exceptions.

          • I think I know what you mean Jay. It’s definitely true that horror has traditionally fared far better in the medium of the feature film than the medium of television and, particularly in the US, the restrictive nature of network television probably played a big part in that.

  2. I’m sad to say that as much as I love this podcast and enjoy hearing you guys talk about all the new releases I actually see very, very few contemporary films. This is partly because it’s difficult for me to get to the cinema but also because my tastes tend to permanently be in a state of retrograde and when I do get around to seeing the handful of modern movies that really interest me I’m normally a year or so late. I do watch a lot of movies but most of the time they’re obscure oddities from the past or list-of-shame picks that I’m catching up on. That said there are a bunch of movies from this year that I want to see (Snowpiercer, Birdman, Fury etc) but I just haven’t found the time yet so I don’t think I can even come up with a top 5 list at the moment. I guess my top 3 might be:

    1. Blue Ruin
    2. The Babadook
    3. Jodorowskys Dune

but that’s probably fairly meaningless considering how little I’ve seen. Also I don’t want you guys to think that you’re not doing a good job of convincing me to check stuff out, quite the contrary in fact, and all the films that you pique my interest in are added to my long list. It’s just that I’m very slow at keeping up with popular culture.

    I’m sorry guys :-[

    • The first two are on my top ten so far, David. Granted, my list is still a work in progress, but I have a feeling that they won’t be debunked by something else. Great pics!

    • David,
I understand perfectly. As much as I hate to admit it, I’m in a similar boat with horror movies for 2014. More on that below in my answer to Juan…

But if you’d do me a favor and just e-mail what you have. I’ll accept a Top 3 list. Even a Top 1 list! And even if you don’t have 5 Honorable Mentions — one or two is fine. Really, we just need as much feedback from the audience about their opinions on 2014 movies as possible. Otherwise, the “audience Top 10” will be just a blend of two people’s lists… And that’s not probably not quite as representative…

Have you seen a terrible 2014 film? Let me know. Were you disappointed in any of the 2014 stuff you saw? Tell us! : ) But I’ll note your Top 3 above. Great picks!
      J

  3. Jay, are we doing a top ten list over at HMP? Because horror was pretty weak overall this year IMHO. I’ve been watching horror movies from the people’s top ten lists and they’re all pretty disappointing.

    • Absolutely we are, Juan, but with this weak-a** caveat…

I’m going to make a list of all the 2014-release Horror I’ve seen, and if it’s a small number (less than 50), then I’ll probably only do a Top 5. I’ll talk about this more on the podcast, but I have issues with only seeing a handful of movies and then making a “Best of the Year” list. That’s laughable to me and irresponsible as a film critic.

On MPW, for example, I feel like we have a pretty strong sample of U.S. releases for 2014 — even individually as hosts — though, I’m still really bothered that I probably won’t get to see “Birdman,” “Whiplash” or “Foxcatcher” before it’s time to make my list. “Foxcatcher” isn’t playing anywhere in Utah until January, so by my reckoning, it’s going to be a 2015 film, much to everyone’s chagrin…

      But back to HMP:
Our End-of-the-Year Wrap-up for 2014 — AND — What’s coming in 2015 episode will be Episode 038, releasing on Friday, January 2. (This Friday, the 19th, will be our Christmas Horrors show.) So, we’ll try to do what we can on HMP by discussing the releases of 2014 that we’ve seen. I’ve also got an idea for another type of Top 10 list. And I know Doc Shock will be doing a Top 10 list of the Horror Blu-rays he got in 2014. So, I think it will be worth your time. And I promise you that I’m trying to figure out a way for me, personally, to bring better coverage of the current-year’s release horror in 2015.

This was a great question. Thanks for asking (and caring). And by all means, feel free to e-mail your top 2014 horror picks to: HorrorMoviePodcast@gmail.com and we’ll discuss them on that show!

      Thanks,
      Jay

  4. Hi Guys

Have sent list over but I still have a lot of movies to catchup on but sent the list to the best of my knowledge

    thanks guys
Happy Xmas and have a Great New Year

  5. I’ve been working on my lists since before you called me out last week, Jason. As any self-respecting human being would, though, I’m just trying to work through my (long) queue of un-watched movies before finalizing things. I liked Godzilla, but I can’t believe that’s one of the 10 best movies of the year. I need a larger sample size!

Piggybacking on what you and Juan were saying above, I do predict that the majority of my “most disappointing” list will be horror titles. Very unfortunate.

    • I knew I could count on you, Dino. Just go with what you’ve seen. That’s what we have to do. (I hate not getting to a few of this year’s titles, but we all know how it is…) Our HMP end-of-the-year show will be even more so that way. I’m looking forward to your list. Thanks for participating!
      J
