  1. Welp, I just returned from the new Super Mario Bros. movie. Boy, Jay, you weren’t kidding. That thing was painful. I just did a quick review of Illumination animation movies, and it is by far the worst animation studio, consistently pushing out joyless, soulless, kid-centric cinema, that for parents is just spoon after spoon of straight arsenic. Minions. Hop. Sing 2. The Secret Life of Pets. Ugh. Kill me.

Super Mario Bros. No kidding. Avoid. And pray that Nintendo inks a new deal with Warner Bros. or Sony Animation (yeah, not going to happen).

Great to hear from you guys!

  2. Agree with Karl about AIR. What a great movie. Sometimes with the right cast and the right vibe, it doesn’t even matter what a movie is about. I kind of hate even just the idea of a movie celebrating a smart marketing decision that turned a billion-dollar business into a multibillion-dollar business. (Yay, capitalism?!) But AIR is delightful. DUNGEONS & DRAGONS is a good one, too. What a difference 20 years makes. The D&D movie directed by Courtney Solomon way back in 2000 was barely watchable, but the new Chris Pine movie is genuinely fun hang.

I missed Jay’s tweet about firing Andy, but come on, Jay. Don’t even joke about that. Andy is an essential ingredient of MPW. GCR and Karl are too nice to tell your most faithful listeners to screw off. Andy is filling a vital role even when he only pretends to see movies and copies whatever GCR has to say about them.
