Also, your movie buddies discuss Warner Brothers’ big move to stream their 2021 movie releases on HBO Max. 1. Well, I for one am glad that MPW has returned with monthly episodes. Where else could I find a podcast with such quotable lines as “I have the ass of a cleanup hitter”, and “It’s like getting a warm hug while being kicked in the nuts.” I’m shelving those in the mental vault for later use.

I was thinking about Chuck Yeager and the “death pool”, and while the idea of the death pool is entertaining in the darkest of ways, I’m also fascinated by the “no really, they’re still with us” pool. For example, I recently re-watched Dead Poet’s Society, and discovered that Norman Lloyd, who plays the principal, Mr. Nolan, is still kicking it at the ripe old age of 106. He was old enough to have produced “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” in the 50’s, and young enough to have an acting credit in 2015’s “Trainwreck”. What a legend. If you come across any other notable “no really, they’re still with us” in your movie travels, I would love to hear about them.

I would love to know more about what made “Mulan” a great film, as I see Jay retroactively gave it a 7.5. I think of any Disney movie that actually deserved a live-action remake, Mulan made the most sense, and I could not have been more excited after watching the trailer. However, I only lasted about 15-20 minutes into the film. I suppose I should give it a fair shot and finish it, but I’m not eager to do that right away. Too bad, because Donnie Yen, Li Gong and Jet Li are legends. I guess I wish that if the film was going to “borrow” tropes from other martial arts/war films, they would find a way to put their own signature on it, rather than just feeling like they cut and pasted all of the style, but didn’t include their own substance. Missed opportunity, in my opinion.

I’m rambling, and while this seems to be a list of “things I want”, what’s more correct is that I’m just happy that 2020 had some welcome surprises, like the return of MPW. Thanks everyone, for being a bright spot on a pretty dim bulb of a year.

  2. Personally, I can’t see WB going the HBO max route past this year. There’s no way hbo paid them enough to sustain a profit in order to keep making new films. I’ve been back to the theater a few times since they reopened locally. I saw WW84 in theater, I’m not interested in HBO max and I’d prefer to support the theaters as long as they stay open. I’ve also seen reviews on the WW84 4k\Atmos streaming quality and it was pretty poor. They have a long way to go to get to that high of a quality with streaming.
