Episode 330

It’s just like old times again… Welcome to Movie Podcast Weekly, Episode 330. You might think you’re listening to a “Lost Episode,” but this is semi-current release where Jason (aka Jay of the Dead) of Considering the Cinema and Horror Movie Weekly returns to serve as Guest Host in order to bring you Jason’s Big Birthday Bash 2019! Karl is absent, but Andy, Ryan and William also appear. These knuckleheads bring you Feature Reviews of Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) and Midsommar (2019) and The Dead Don’t Die (2019). As far as MPW episodes go, this show has most elements of a “classic MPW show,” except there’s no sleeping and no Karl. Otherwise, it’s still a must-listen. Join us!

If you’re new to our show… Movie Podcast Weekly typically features three hosts — Andy, Karl and Geek Cast Ry — along with frequent guests. We give you our verdicts on at least one new movie release from the current year that’s currently playing in theaters, as well as several mini reviews of whatever we’ve been watching lately. New episodes release every single week!

  1. Happy belated birthday bash episode MPW!

The segment with the horse lady was particularly entertaining. Jay have you ever seen a person break their elbow so that their forearm is bent the opposite way it’s supposed to? The way she runs is unnatural, but not as off putting as a limb bending in broken horrible fashion. Please don’t stab anyone. Thank you.

Andy proves just how useless he is once again. You have no idea how much I want to expand on this specific topic, but I will spare this thread of that. I’ll send you an email on that instead where the black gloves and butcher knife can really come into play, unencumbered and uncensored.

Spiderman was entertaining and fun, but that is what it’s supposed to be and Marvel has great experience in ensuring that the formula continues to provide clear victories at the cinema. I agree with Karl. It’s an 8 and a buy.

I already shared my review of Midsommar on HMP, but I agree with Jay. It’s an 8.5 and a buy. The director’s cut increased the score to a 9 and a buy for Midsommar.

I am actually seeing The Dead Don’t Die this week as it was just released on blu ray. I do not have high expectations for any film directed by Jim Jarmusch, so hopefully, it will be decent. It has a great cast so that is encouraging and I love zombie movies, so I am looking forward to seeing this.

I’m really relieved that Jay is no longer hosting this podcast. It was painful to get through 330 episodes and I look forward to not having to listen to Andy in the future. For Karl, William and Ryan, best of luck to your future endeavors!

    Thanks guys,
    SS

  2. Sean,
You crack me up! No, I haven’t seen a person do that elbow thing in real life, but I have seen elbows snapped that way during movie martial arts battles. It’s sickening.

Andy is an acquired taste, like coffee or beer (I’m told), and therefore, still loved by many… ha ha

Yeah, William and Ryan are better hosts, but it’s still fun for me to visit every once in awhile. It’s like returning home on Thanksgiving and wrestling with your brothers in the front yard, even though you’re too old to do that… ha ha Thanks for commenting, Sean.

  3. So Jason’s wife cares he does this podcast but then he starts a whole new weekly podcast? Jason has no time for this podcast but he starts a whole new one? What gives?

    • Totally fair question. I explain in Ep. 001 of Horror Movie Weekly that my new co-host agreed to edit the new show, so it requires me no editing time! And we only review one movie and our episodes are 45 min. or less.

I love MPW and HMP. Always will. But MPW took me, literally, between 10 to 15 hours per week, and HMP was something crazy, like, 15 to 25 hours every other week. (That’s to watch all the movies, prep time, recording time, and especially show notes, editing and post-production.)

My new show, Horror Movie Weekly takes about 90 minutes to watch the one film, and 45 minutes to record. That’s it!

And most importantly, I did get my wife’s blessing for the new show (and I think it was because my co-host is editing).

I just didn’t explain all the above during this episode’s 1-minute commercial because I didn’t want to bore everyone. : ) ha ha

  4. Midsommar is my BMOTY so far. When I walk into a theater or put a movie on my TV, perhaps the best thing I can hope for is a work that takes me somewhere, challenges me, and makes me feel like I’ve experienced something significant. That is this movie, so much so. Wow. 9.5

Also with you on The Dead Don’t Die. Enjoyed it, but didn’t quite love it. 7.5

And Spidey Far from Home was fun. 7.5

  5. Thoughts on this episode:

    – It’s always fun to have Jason back, even for just one episode.
    – It’s just you, Jay. The woman who runs like a horse is weird, but not existentially terrifying. Like GCR, I’m actually very impressed by her picnic table jump. Based on Jay’s buildup, I was expecting something like when possessed girls in horror movies twist their necks around and spider-crawl backwards up walls, or whatever, only in real life. But when I paused the episode and watched the video, all I saw was a woman with well-defined glutes running around in a field. I actually thought she looked more like a baboon or an orangutan until the table jump part. That really did look horse-like.
    – Jay’s rap is first-rate. Oh should I say, J-Flexx’s rap is first rate. Fun video, and very well-directed by Friend of the Podcast Mac Robbins. And I enjoyed hearing Jay share some behind-the-scenes production details.
    – One of the many things I enjoyed about Into the Spider-Verse is that it actually grappled with the fact that many, if not most, of the Spider-Man comic books are about Peter Parker as an adult. The movies are all stuck in his teenagerhood, and a lot of the comics are, too, but there’s no reason to keep telling that part of the story over and over again. Also, Into the Spider-Verse, for me at least, is easily the best Spider-Man movie anyone has ever made. I was really into the John Hughes movie stretches of Far From Home. The rest of it wavered between being merely decent and pretty good, but the teenage nostalgia stuff was great.
    – Jay needs to stop taking a dump on Stranger Things because he watched part of one episode and thought the monster was lame. Be fair to the creators, Jay, and at least watch the entire first episode before walking away.
    – I’m with GCR on Stranger Things. I haven’t totally loved every plot twist and storytelling beat. So much of it, though, all three seasons, is just so darn good that I’ll watch those characters do anything. I watch a lot of other stuff on Netflix, but I would at least think about keeping my subscription alive just to watch Stranger Things, even if I never watched anything else.
    – Poor Security Guard Karl. I’ll have to keep my eyes open the next time I enter a mall. If I see Karl, I’ll buy him an Orange Julius. (Is that still a thing in malls? I go to a mall maybe once a year these days.) Does Karl work in a mall, or did I just make that part up in my head?
