  1. Sorry guys you are wrong and Jays right about Triple Frontier.

It is an exercise in toxic masculity, capitalism and greed while at the same time being a fun action flick.

You all took it too seriously and ran past the simple topical meaning of the film.

    • Topical meanings are all well-and-good, but the character motivations and story needed to be more fleshed out for me to give Triple Frontier a stronger recommendation. And a more hardcore action finale would have helped too. 🙂

  2. I don’t know why Andy claims he’s not smart. Imagine the sheer number of types of butterflies and moths he has to keep track of. How much do you think Jay knows about butterflies? Jay probably thinks a polyphemus is a butterfly. A butterfly! Meanwhile, Andy has the mad knowledge to know that it’s a moth and not a butterfly.

  3. Tip of the hat. I think you guys nailed Triple Threat. The big problem was the amount of potential that was wasted due to inconsistent and poorly mapped characters. There was no character payoff in the latter half of the movie. Things just kind of fizzled out. The poor decisions, made mostly by Affleck, never really get the development they need to feel like anything more than just forced plot contrivances.

I have never wished so hard that a movie was one of those Choose Your Own Adventures where you can click a button on your remote and steer the story a certain way. I could have got those guys out easy. Zero problems. With 5 million each.

How cool would it have been if the younger brother pulled aside his bro (sometime after the heist) and said: “Look, man, I know you wanted Affleck. I know he is a great planner. But back in the field the dude [insert sketchy backstory that highlights his greed and/or failure in high crisis situations].” Then the two brothers begin doubting Affleck’s leadership. Affleck gets wounded. Oscar Issac, who feels guilty about the whole situation, decides to stay and fight with Affleck. Both die in an awesome firefight. Meanwhile, the two brothers (and Pedro) make a desperate trek for the boat. My vote would be for Pedro to die and the two brothers make it out in another slickly shot shootout. Then the survivors can ultimately donate the money to the dead men’s families.

It took me less than a minute to cook up that plot, and I think it would have been leagues better, strengthened the themes, and been less nonsensical than what we endured.

It is too bad because this movie had a lot going for it. It could have been something really great.

  4. I’m not sure I understand all the heightened emotions over this movie. It was a somewhat average action film, with only one member of the group dying in the end. The character that dies is the one responsible for their extra difficulties in the first place. The rest of the team survives and ends up with money which they give to their dead friend’s trust. I really wanted more action and well choreographed set-pieces. It could have been much better if the team had the opportunity to kill more drug dealers. Instead, it became a logistics story. UPS loves this movie.

  5. Hi guys,
Thanks for keeping the show going. Even if you miss a couple of weeks here and there it is always nice to catch up with the MPW hosts. Miss you J, I hope your jiu jitsu training is going well.
Based on this episode I checked out Triple Frontier and I cannot say that I was impressed. 🙂 Maybe my expectations were too high because of the cast. If I went in knowing to look for a cheesy B movie then maybe I would have enjoyed it more. Some action scenes were decent, but a lot of the time they were undercut by laughable special effects. During the helicopter scenes I thought I was watching a direct to video film made by the Asylum. Overall I would say just skip it.
