  1. While I think it’s easy to observe and notice the weakness of this new era of MPW, I’m finding that I’m appreciating this new era quite a bit. Obviously, I’d prefer if Jay eventually returns to the show somewhere down the line, but I’m feeling like if he were to return, this break would have been greatly beneficial for MPW. If there was one weakness of Jay on MPW, it’s that it was the Jay Show. That’s not a knock on the guy, but rather a statement that all you needed was Jay and the show was always being held together. I know many times before, Jay would claim that even if his co-hosts weren’t able to show up, he’d just do a solo cast (Obviously that was before he shot his nine year old children in the face).

Now, MPW is forced to figure out how to keep working without Jay. I’d compare MPW to Jay’s body. Jay was the functioning heart of MPW. Now, just like Jay’s real heart, the heart of MPW was no longer able to function, forcing MPW to gain a pacemaker in the form of really all four current co-hosts. This pacemaker crew is now trying to figure out how to keep this body running and after some growing pains, they’re showing that the body can still live a mostly normal life.

In some ways, this pacemaker is even finding ways to succeed in its unorthodox style in ways that its original heart couldn’t succeed at. Case in point – Andy’s “Plugs”. As great of a host as Jay was, in 300+ episodes, he never once got a plug out of Andy. Now Ryan and William has figured out ways to get a form of a plug out of Andy two episodes in a row!

    • Love the comparison, Sal. There is plenty to applaud in the new post-Jay format. I feel a tad guilty for comparing them to a car crash. It’s still darn good movie podcasting and a lot of fun to listen to.

Where would you place the other members of the show in the anatomy of MPW? My knee-jerk reaction was to call Karl the brains, but I think that is just because he and I tend to have some similar tastes. But ‘the brains’ doesn’t seem a curmudgeony enough fit. Maybe he’s the aching, sore muscles? Considering all we have to work with, I suppose William Rowan Jr. is the brains. This one also irks because I need my 1-10 rating scale, dangit!

      Anyway, back to March Madness.

      • Karl doesn’t pay enough attention to the movie MPW is discussing at any time to be the brains. Haha

The sore muscles is a fine selection for Karl. It always goes along with the idea that if any member of MPW were to get into scrapes at the cinema, it’s likely going to be Karl due to people sitting in other’s seats, talking during the movie, or just generally being a dink. Karl’s the one you want to be going to the movies with just for backup.

I had a tough time coming up with a body part for Andy because bless him, but he’s so all over the place. What I think makes the most sense is that Andy is the vocal cords/mouth of MPW. Just like for anyone’s mouth, sometimes it gets you into trouble. Other times it makes you sound really smart. There’s times when people even want you to shut up and will Paypal money to do so. There’s even times when out of your own frustration, you throw a tantrum and refuse to speak (How many times has Andy quit the Skype call during recordings? That’s perfect). For better or for worse, Andy is the mouth of MPW.

Besides being a part of the pacemaker keeping MPW going, I’m not sure if William is an actual body part, but rather he’s the conscious of MPW. Across different podcasts on the MPN, I’ve often heard Solo voice his frustration with having to give out a rating or more common, recommendations for others to follow. He doesn’t want to steer people wrong based solely on how he feels about something, without knowing how others would react to it. Basically, if Andy’s mouth gets MPW into trouble, it’s William’s conscious that keeps MPW out of trouble.

Just because I’ve already picked some odd body part selections for others, I’m going to continue the trend for Ryan. Ryan are the stem cells injected into the MPW body to be grown into whatever MPW is requiring. Back when Josh left MPW, Ryan was brought on to replace Josh and “Re-grow” that missing part. As time went on, Ryan started to make his own impact on the body, offering things that no one knew was missing from the MPW body. Now granted, maybe some of what he added to the body was about as useful as a third nipple (I’m looking at you Teen Mom talk), but other things like his knowledge and opinions on superheros have benefited the MPW body. While it’s still too early to know what’s happening in this new era of MPW, I suspect Ryan’s role in the body continues to change, filling in for whatever is now missing with Jay’s departure.

  2. I liked the conversation about “The Academy”. The problem with Stephen Spielberg and “Big Movie” and also other institutions like Miss America, et al., is that they hold on to the old paradigm far past the point when it’s relevant. Having no host at the awards show is not the change that’s needed. These long-running institutions all need to move forward with the flow of technology and the way people are using media now. I think music awards are a little more fluid and willing to add new categories and recognize artists coming from new sources. You just can’t keep the old rules forever, people.

  3. Jay, if you’re reading this, please come back. I needed you to provide a reality check to your cohosts regarding Captain Marvel. All the gushing over this one is really getting my goat. That movie was good at best and mostly mediocre.

Below are my thoughts from href=”https://boxd.it/FwfUB”>my Letterboxd review:

My rabble-rousing reaction is to call this Marvel Studio’s unfortunate answer to DC’s Green Lantern(2011), but that isn’t quite fair. Captain Marvel isn’t that bad. But it isn’t great either.

In a contemporary comic-film world that includes Waititi’s endlessly enjoyable take on Thor and the star-studded magic of Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel arrives with less oohs and aahs and more shrugs and sighs.

Brie Larson does a fine job portraying Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. Her character is likable, if a little thinly drawn. Late in the film, she complains about not knowing who she is. Viewers are likely having the same problem, and the little clarifying speech from her friend helps the audience as much as our heroine.

Minus some sniper-work from Minn-Erva (Gemma Chan), a plane crash, and a few photon blasts, the action scenes are easily forgettable. Tack on some agonizingly-serious space fantasy drama (the likes of which haven’t been seen since Thor: The Dark World), a plot that is more concerned with connecting MCU dots than developing characters, and an underwhelming villain, and it’s hard to find compelling reasons to recommend this one.

Wait! Samuel L. Jackson does provide some decent chuckles. Ben Mendelsohn shatters the typecasting ceiling. And cat lovers have a new feline to fall in love with.

But that isn’t much, is it? Once the newness wears off, Captain Marvel will fall in the middle of the MCU rankings at best. It isn’t a trainwreck by any stretch, but it isn’t even close to great.

Bring on Shazam! and Avengers: Endgame.

    • Funny you should say that about Brie Larsen, Vance. I know she’s a retiring person, but I feel like that in every role she’s ever played. I like her, I just don’t know her.

      • I’m enjoying these Stan Lee-like cameos from Jay. Whether it’s Andy calling him up and waking Jay up, only to quickly hang up on him or to read some of Jay’s questionable movie opinions.

  4. You know, I had initially kicked this episode to the back of my podcast queue due to my indifference in seeing the films reviewed, and y’all made me regret that choice. This was a wonderful episode. Not sure if it was Karl hyping up Apollo 11, or a well-timed “bi-curious” joke from Andy that made me laugh out loud, but this episode felt like everyone was throwing their fastball. Jay even managed to s**t on yet another Marvel film, a remarkable feat due to his absence from the airwaves.

I get strong Superman vibes from Captain Marvel, which has made me keep my distance, as he’s been my least-favorite superhero for as long as I can remember, but you’ve convinced me that Captain Marvel is worth a shot. And I will definitely check out Apollo 11. Thanks MPW Crew!
