Movie Podcast Weekly Ep. 304: The Happytime Murders (2018) and Papillon (2018) and Christopher Robin (2018)

Episode 304 - Papillon

For those who “have peppermint in their butts,” this is Movie Podcast Weekly, Episode 304, another ridiculous edition of the Clown Car of Movie Podcasting. Ryan the Millennial shirked his responsibilities for this show, so Jason, Andy and Karl bring you half-hearted Feature Reviews of The Happytime Murders (2018) and Papillon (2018) and Christopher Robin (2018), of which some people say, teaches principles of jujitsu… If you don’t believe us, we don’t blame you.

If you’re new to our show… Movie Podcast Weekly typically features four hosts — Jason, Andy, Karl and Geek Cast Ry — along with frequent guests. We give you our verdicts on at least one new movie release from the current year that’s currently playing in theaters, as well as several mini reviews of whatever we’ve been watching lately. New episodes release every single week!

  1. Orko the Destroyer is a way cooler band name than Dorky Cobra. Sorry, Jay, but if I were to start a band tomorrow, I would totally get after my bandmates to call ourselves Orko the Destroyer, whereas I wouldn’t even mention Dorky Cobra. Even Peppermint in Your Butt, or maybe The Butt Mints, would be a better band name than Dorky Cobra. I wouldn’t even name a fantasy football team Dorky Cobra.

Also, I feel like this episode was just Jay talking about movies with himself. Oh, wait, that’s because IT WAS. I guess that level of interest/participation is kind of becoming an annual late summer tradition: I feel like there was an episode last year right around this exact point in the calendar where no one but Jay had seen any of the new movies. I probably complained about it then, too. Come on, Andy and Karl (and GCR), see some movies. I mean, I’m happy to listen to Jay talk about movies with occasional interjections from Karl and Andy, but it’s a better show when more than one person has seen the movies.

I’m actually not sure what I did/said to get Andy’s dander up. I guess if he was riled enough to say something on the air, then I must have done something right. 🙂

P.S. Jay, what happened to Ep. 302 and Ep. 303? Did they get “lost,” or something?

  2. Question for the Room: Did Jay ever make good on his bet with GCR from Ep. 193? The deal was that Jay would buy GCR a Tour of Italy at Olive Garden if he ended up honestly and sincerely giving The Last Jedi a rating lower than 9. I know there was a pretty gargantuan lag time between the bet being placed and Jay giving Last Jedi a 7.5 on Ep. 270, but I also know that MPW is a place where there is an almost holy reverence for bets. I’d hate to think that Mr. Peanut Buster Parfait never paid up. There’s still time to do the right thing, Jay. #TourOfItaly #JusticeForGCR

  3. There have been three remakes of A Star is Born;1937, 1954, and 1976. I recently watched the 1976 version and read a bunch of reviews that called it the weakest of the lot. I’m suuuuper excited for the Cooper/Gaga version and agree with your wife, Jay, that the beef you had with the trailer may have been a weird cut. In the Streisand/Christopherson version though, he is a country/rock singer out out of his prime and her music, (classic Streisand – and more pop than his moneymaker) has nothing to do with his music either. I haven’t seen the old versions, but even if Cooper’s character is a country singer who recognizes and pulls her (Gaga’s) talent into view, it would be true to the prior storyline.

  4. I love how Karl opens up about how someone close to him had to put their dog down and neither Jay nor Andy acknowledged it and kept speculating about wether it was dog day or not, cold as ice fellas but very funny.

  5. The actor Andy is thinking of that looks exactly like Tom Hardy is probably Logan Marshall Green… They are identical! Also Charlie Hunnam does look a lot like Heath Ledger.

    • I have an app on my phone called JustWatch. You can select the streaming services and premium channels you use and then search a movie to see if it is available on any of them.
