  1. Hey guys – Thanks for the coverage of The Wire. Great job! Ryan hit it right on when he said; “Yes, I can see why people think it’s good. Can you see why people might think it’s slow?” It’s true that it’s deliberately done but I think the pacing (once you get used to it) is one of it’s strengths. I can feel a whole lot of potential simmering here and I wonder if a lot of the love this series gets is somewhat retroactive. Maybe stuff that happens later really delivers a payoff and makes you really love the early stuff inclusively?

Here’s one question that I have, maybe Karl can address it. In a scripted drama, how does a director achieve (especially with several young actors as we have here) the absence of any sense that there is “acting” going on? I’ve rarely seen more authentic performances, especially, as I said, among the young people. Is this a case of Correct Casting (I refer to something Christoff Waltz says to Jerry Seinfeld in his episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee) or is it the most talented group of people ever assembled? Or is it the writing? Or the directing? Whatever it is, you truly do get lost in it, as Jay said.

I also loved the mention of the f*** scene (episode 4). Truly classic, but there’s another one (maybe even better) coming up in episode 7. McNulty and Bunk are at the bar. They have an exchange that makes me feel like I’m truly listening in on a conversation between two buddies who have been working together a long time. They have history. They can say things that only the two of them understand. It’s subtle and nuanced. And that’s what smart people like about this series. It’s hard-hitting, but it’s not hitting you over the head.

    I’m in.

  2. Did Jay’s Coca-Cola get spiked before you started recording? This is one of my favourite episodes ever, I was laughing like a lunatic walking down the street.

  3. Where can we find the lost episodes that are live now? They haven’t come through my iTunes feed that I can tell.

    • Keep an eye on the sidebar’s image under “Pending MPW Episodes”. That will let you know which numbers to be hunting down.

      Currently, it’s just episodes 252 and 253.

Since iTunes only goes back 25 episodes, those episodes can no longer be found on iTunes/Stitcher. You can always find the episodes on this site (Look on the sidebar) and download them or use the archive to quickly have access to every past episode:

      https://moviepodcastweekly.com/mpw-episode-archive/

In addition, there’s other podcast apps like Castbox that seems to handle podcasts differently than iTunes, and they keep every single episode on their app.
