This week Jason saw The 15:17 to Paris (2018) because he’s a total sucker… But Ryan saw Fifty Shades Freed (2018) because he’s a total pervert. Those are our Feature Reviews in Episode 278 of Movie Podcast Weekly, the Clown Car of Movie Podcasting. So, sorry… we have two duds for you this week. Karl is sick this week, but you still have Jason, Andy and Ryan. Overall, it’s a decent episode of MPW, even with the four-minute story that Jason needed to cut and tack on to the end for our most intrepid listeners… In short, we also talk about a bunch of other smut. Join us!
If you’re new to our show… Movie Podcast Weekly typically features four hosts — Jason, Andy, Karl and Geek Cast Ry — along with frequent guests. We give you our verdicts on at least one new movie release from the current year that’s currently playing in theaters, as well as several mini reviews of whatever we’ve been watching lately. New episodes release every single week!

Really enjoyed this episode. I’ve just discovered you all so I’m going back and listening to your older episodes. You guys are very entertaining and I think you do a great job. Especially you Jason. I love movies and I love to talk about movies so I enjoy the podcast a lot. I did miss Karl on this episode. So I hope he feels better soon.
Animal House is a masterpiece and great comedy.
I grew up watching it on cable(edited for content) like many other comedy films of the era. Blues Brothers, Caddyshack, Police Academy, Revenge of the Nerds, etc. What was interesting, for years I was a accustomed to viewing these filtered for my tender eyes.
My eldest brother knew this and would say, there’s an entirely different film out there for each of these. As time passed, I forgot about this double version of each film.
I already had an admiration for all these classic comedies, it was only deepened upon watching the full “high test” version.
Animal House is the pinnacle of comedy, often emulated never duplicated. Many individuals have been and are inspired by this one film. I’m rambling, but I could discuss this film at great length. It’s impact upon me, recreating scenes in real life, finding I’m living a sequence from the film, etc.
*Possible Spoils Ahead for A Futile and Stupid Gesture ***
A Futile and Stupid Gesture touches upon all this. Animal House and the like came during a Golden Age. When SNL was in it’s infancy. When stand-up comedy was pushing the envelopes and becoming mainstream. Douglas Kenney who is the inspiration for A Futile and Stupid Gesture, was a genius. It’s depicted beautifully.
I knew about his troubled past from when I was pursuing comedy. It actually led me to not do comedy as a profession. Douglas and other comedians who had demons within their lives. Demons being drugs, alcohol, the fast lifestyle and stardom. I love making people laugh and entertaining, but I also cherished more, so I stayed reserved and entertain those around me.
Like John Belushi, Douglas Kenney, John Candy, Chris Farley, and I know plenty more writers and funny people, died too soon. Fortunately humans share the stories that help us to keep their memories alive.
I’m rambling, but I was moved to share my random thoughts.
I will be 40 this year, Animal House will also be. I’m hoping for a theatrical remembrance release so I can see it on the BIG Screen and enjoy the masterpiece.
I have to echo what one Twitter commented said – I was a bit disappointed in your handling of the “Isn’t it time we have a same sex figure skating couple?” conversation. I understand the sentiment of not getting involved in political discussions, but your silence when the topic is introduced almost speaks more than if you just said something diplomatic like “I could see how some could be against that and how some would like that.” I don’t expect everyone to share my political views but I did find that moment a little alienating, even as a straight man.
I totally get not wanting everything to get bogged down in politics since it seems to infiltrate every aspect of our lives these days (e.g. football). A movie podcast doesn’t have to address those sorts of issues, though I understand it’s part of the cultural zeitgeist and will come up sometimes. However, I also noticed that you retweeted one of the president’s inflammatory Tweets, which could be interpreted as endorsing him. As I said, it’s your show and not everyone has to agree with your views, but you can’t claim to be apolitical and then do something like that. You should definitely speak your mind and voice your views (it’s your show after all!) but then be willing to converse with those who don’t agree. I know this is a bit long-winded but I just wanted to add my two cents.
