  1. Dino & J –

I haven’t had the chance to see South Korea’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film, Age of Shadows yet (hopefully soon), but according to David Ehrlich (in his column bemoaning the fact that no Korean movie has ever won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film), “…perhaps we shouldn’t have been all that surprised when KOFIC decided to overlook “The Handmaiden” and submit Kim Jee-woon’s sporadically entertaining (but ultimately impenetrable) espionage thriller “The Age of Shadows” instead. Why not. Burn it all down.”

FWIW, I saw The Handmaiden with a Korean female friend that told me that you generally still can’t say you’re gay (openly) in South Korea (i.e. it’s still a very conservative country). And since The Handmaiden seemed to get a ton more international attention and festival love than Age of Shadows, it feels, rightly or wrongly, like homophobia was at least one of the reasons *The Handmaiden* wasn’t submitted.

  2. J, easy fix for your top 10 list. Put Lion in place of Room. Much as I adore Room, it had no legal place on a 2016 list, even by your own definitions.

Don’t tell me you didn’t see the quotes I reposted a while ago, where I told you in November and December of 2015 to go see Room while it was showing in SLC.
