  1. Woah! Yorgos really found how to get under Karl’s skin. I’m fascinated by how repulsed he became as a result of his viewing of The Favourite. Hope the rest of you dudes see it (especially Ryan since he liked the Lobster so much) and round out Karl’s ridiculous rating.

Also very nice hearing Jason’s voice. Made me excited for the other Lost Episodes.

  2. Wonderful episode, as usual. Great work, fellas. Jay, I’m happy that you’re happy, and I enjoy the new show with the old crew. But man is it good to hear another one of these that has you in it.

I’m sincerely baffled by the caginess and reticence of both Jay and GCR about Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. I really am fine with differences of opinion. It just seems like both Jay and GCR really liked the movie — GCR almost bumped up his rating on the spot just from Jay mildly questioning his enthusiasm — and were at best uncertain themselves about the substance of their criticisms.

GCR said, “Of course it’s an animated movie,” but didn’t elaborate on why that (apparently automatically) makes it less entertaining than a live-action Marvel movie. That criticism is especially confounding since Into the Spider-Verse is anything but typical as a work of animation. It’s incredibly inventive. This is the fullest possible realization of what Ang Lee tried so many years with split-screens and inset frames in Hulk. Spider-Verse takes what was at best an interesting gimmick in the earlier film, however, and delightfully and seamlessly brings it to life. And then we get all of the different textures, the blurs, the vibrant colors, the perfectly modulated mix of pinpoint realism and exaggerated plasticity, the harmonious blending of different styles. This is one of those animated movies that has loving detail in every frame. It’s AMAZING (as a Spider-Man movie should be).

I’m OK with Jay being bugged by Spider-Ham and Peni Parker. But to imply that there’s no meaningful drama in a film where [SPOILER ALERT] Spider-Man dies, Miles is torn between his father and uncle, Peter B. Parker rediscovers his sense of purpose, Peter B. Parker both mentors and shelters Miles, Spider-Gwen accepts Miles as a friend, Miles and his father must separately wrestle with Uncle Aaron’s demise (and criminal background), and Miles discovers what it means to be a hero [END SPOILERS] and more just because the ending involves a few familiar elements. That’s cold, man. What’s more, there is a detailed explanation given of what is causing the power surges, why that project was undertaken, and what the stakes are for everyone involved. The threat scenario is far more clear, convincing, and emotionally involving than Marvel’s typical shaggy dog story about some magical galactic doodad that has “just because” powers that someone is bound to misuse.

If you guys really just can’t stomach certain elements of Into the Spider-Verse, I can accept that. It just seemed, listening to the episode, that you were trying to find reasons, against your own better judgment, to say, “Settle down, fellas,” to everyone who liked the movie. Which includes me. I’m one of “those” guys. I have zero hesitation about saying that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a stone cold 10 out of 10. It’s a 15 out of 10. It hooked me from the start. It made just as happy the second and third times. (I feel the fourth time coming on right now.) I have never seen a movie that has a better grasp of the joy of reading a good comic book, and more specifically, the joy of reading a good Spider-Man comic book. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is:

    — My favorite Spider-Man movie
    — My favorite Marvel movie
    — My favorite comic book movie
    — My favorite superhero movie (OK, maybe it’s neck-and-neck here with The Incredibles)
    — My favorite movie of 2018
    — My favorite movie of 2019

The Oscars got it right by giving Spider-Verse the Condescending Pat on the Shoulder Best Animated Feature Oscar, but … Spider-Verse and not Black Panther (also excellent), should have been the Marvel movie nominated for Best Picture.

    • Cody, I think you nailed it. It’s nice to read some unabashed love for Spider-Verse after the ho-hum report from MPW. I also loved it. It was easily one of the top movies of last year and definitely my favorite Spider-man movie.

  3. Haven’t listened yet… catching up on various podcasts… but sounds like I’m with Cody on Spiderverse. Watched it again the other day and it went from a 9.5 to a 10. (FWIW, the only other 10 of 2018 for me was Paddington 2.) Also my favorite Spider-Man and Marvel movie ever.

Also LOVED The Favourite and saw that twice in the theater. Whatever Karl says about it, he is way wrong. 😜 9.5
