Movie Podcast Weekly Ep. 367: March 2025

Well, well, well… Two releases within, like, 12 hours — releases that are several months late but finally released at approximately same time (because we’re recording another one tonight). It’s time, once again, for MOVIE PODCAST WEEKLY, Episode 367, fashionably late as always, bringing you our half-baked thoughts on the late Val Kilmer’s filmography and the March 2025 movie releases! Join your hosts — Jason Pyles, Karl Huddleston, Ryan Elliott, and A Guy Named Andy — as we fumble our way through another round of cinematic hot takes, barely-researched opinions, and occasional grunts of approval. If you came here for insight, you might be lost. But if you’re here for chaotic comfort and movie banter that goes nowhere, you’re home, Baby. Listen!

If you’re a Horror movie fan, listen to Jay of the Dead’s NEW HORROR MOVIES and Horror Movie Weekly!

  1. California does not smell like pot. (Former California resident speaking.) Yeesh. It smells like the ocean, air pollution, broken dreams, and sweat. Maybe a little bit like Gavin Newsom’s cologne, or at least a little bit more than it used to. Also, long live MPW jokes about Jay’s purple belt!

I hate to correct GCR, but Wes Studi does *not* play the penultimate Mohican in The Last of the Mohicans. He doesn’t even play a Mohican. Wes’s character, Magua, is a member of the Huron tribe, both in the movie and in the original novel by James Fenimore Cooper. The penultimate Mohican is Uncas, played by Canadian actor Eric Schweig. (Eric Schweig, at least according to Wikipedia, has Inuit, Portuguese, German, and Senegalese ancestry. Wes Studi, incidentally, is Cherokee.) Does all of this mean that GCR is off the podcast? Or does he get a mulligan for confusing Wes Studi with Eric Schweig … since Studi’s character does kill Schweig’s character, and Schweig’s character *is* the penultimate Mohican?

I enthusiastically second Karl’s recommendation of Dark Winds. That show rules. And it’s a great showcase for Zahn McClarnon, who plays the main character, Joe Leaphorn. He’s an amazing actor, and it’s wonderful to see him get a series lead role.
