[NOT A COMMENT ABOUT EPISODE 301] If anyone out there doesn’t already know it from listening to 300-ish episodes of MPW, Jay is a seriously thoughtful, considerate, and kind dude. A couple of days ago I was listening to Episode 253, one of the recently resurfaced “lost” episodes, and learned for the very first time that Jay is a Settlers of Catan hater. He’s talked about Settlers on the show once before, but didn’t disclose his true feelings that time. As Jay notes in Episode 253, while defending himself against Ry and Andy, his hatred of Settlers (I think the actual word used is that he “detests” the game) is based on having played a handful of times with me and my wife (and also his own wife).
That was 13-ish years ago. I never knew until now how much Jay hates playing Settlers, because he is so gracious and kindhearted that he would never pooh-pooh something you love in your presence. (Er, unless you’re Ry or Andy and it’s Episode 253, I guess.) He just played along because he could tell that Heather and I really do like the game. He came over for multiple game nights, and even learned (and laughed at) our silly Settlers in-jokes. He probably moved to West Virginia to write for the newspaper because it was seemed kinder to do that than tell us he’d rather not play Settlers anymore. I’m totally not ribbing you, Jay, I’m sincerely impressed. 🙂
Jay, while Mr. Cody Clark is impressed, I’m disappointed. You dismissed Eight Grade as a movie about the eight grade, which is not. It’s so much deeper than that and I guarantee you that you will love it. It’s currently my BMOTY if that’s worth anything to you. Please don’t waste your money and our time by reviewing The Spy Who Dumped Me. That’s Karl fodder (sorrynotsorry Karl). You’re better than that. Go see Eight Grade, please, and thank me later.
-Your best friend, Juan.
You realize, of course, Juan, that Jay saw The Spy Who Dumped Me (or possibly Disney’s Christopher Robin) and recorded Episode 302 probably roughly 15 or 16 days before you made your impassioned plea. Sorry, bro. The world is a dark and cruel place. (It’s good to know that Eighth Grade is awesome, tho. I will check it out ASAP.)
Gents, for this to be the worst episode ever, wouldn’t there have to have been other bad episodes? I mean, maybe some of the Lost Episodes are uncharacteristically sucky. We may never know. I still haven’t ever actually listened to an MPW that I thought was a stinker, however, except for maybe the one that the fellas did without Jay where they made up the plot of CHIPS. That was a dud, or at least the not-review of CHIPS was. Anyway, I thought this episode was fun. I even laughed out loud at the part where Jay and Ryan discussed accidental wiener detachment.
I do, however, have a dark secret to confess: Ozark just didn’t do it for me. I watched the first four episodes and couldn’t stick with it. Interesting setting and obviously a high-quality production, but I just couldn’t stay engaged with the plot and characters. (Was that a reconfession? Did I already fess up last year? Don’t recall. All of the pop culture chatter about Season 2, however, including on this episode, reminded me that I don’t care about Ozark.)
“Searching” the movie. 7/10. It’s become kind of a reoccurring theme to use social media in some current films and this film is basically all from the viewing perspective of watching it unfold on a computer. John cho had a god performance and I really liked the pace of the movie. Rewrite maybe the last 10 minutes of the movie to be more effective and I think it could have been an 8 or so. Still worth a watch.
Cody. You’re not alone in your feelings for Season 2 of Ozark. I’m about halfway through the season and some recent web inquiries turned up a LOT more lukewarm reviews than I would have expected.
