Movie Podcast Weekly Ep. 235: Going in Style (2017)

Episode 235 - Going in Style

Jason made it home to Utah (barely), so Movie Podcast Weekly, Episode 235 finds our show mostly back to normal again… There’s no guy named Andy this week, but we bring you an earnest Feature Review of Going in Style (2017). And perhaps you’ll be entertained while listening to us discuss the new Thor: Ragnarok trailer, a Bollywood flick that Ryan watched with no subtitles, and even a little debate about the morality of films that are designed to make us root for immoral characters… Not our best show ever, but then again, not our worst, either. Join us!

If you’re new to our show… Movie Podcast Weekly typically features four hosts — Jason, Andy, Karl and Geek Cast Ry — along with frequent guests. We give you our verdicts on at least one new movie release from the current year that’s currently playing in theaters, as well as several mini reviews of whatever we’ve been watching lately. New episodes release every single week!

  1. I rarely comment on the podcasts I listen to. I love the dynamics of all of you, and the horror version too. I just have to say, Jason you sound like such a nice guy, with a smile in your voice. I’m so glad you are doing well.

    • The chemistry between all the guys is definitely what keeps me coming back. I love movies, and it’s great to hear them talk about something I’m personally interested in, but I would keep listening even if each podcast was just the guys covering miscellaneous unrelated topics. It always just sounds like four friends catching up and spirits are always high and it’s such a joy to be involved in that

  2. Oooh, pick me, pick me! I live in Utah Valley, and I would consider it both and honor and a true pleasure to join the ranks of the Jason Babysitters Club. Just tell me when, brother, and I’ll take you to the movies. (I don’t hold hands on the first date, though. 🙂 ) Is the new Transformers movie getting here in the next eight weeks?

    • Cody, you should take him to see the Power Rangers movie. It’s actually pretty good. It’s not going to win any Academy Awards, but it’s well shot, well acted, and the cast is on-point. It’s a worthy iteration of the show that we all know and love(?) although if all you want from your Power Rangers is cheese, you’ll be disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, there’s cheese to be found here, but not nearly as much as in the show. I think it’s definitely a better treatment than Transformers got.

      7/10

      • Interesting. I have never seen the Power Rangers at work, either on TV or in the movies. I think I was too old to catch the wave the first time it rolled through, and now I’m just (sigh) older. Thanks for making me feel old, Juan. 🙂

My kids behold all manner of ancient cheese on Netflix (tie-in ‘toons for My Little Pony and Strawberry Shortcake, for example), but I don’t think ever they have ever encountered the Might Morphin’ crew.

  3. Y’all should post or something when you’re going to a movie together! I might be able to sneak off to one of those….

    • OK. For Jenifer and anyone else in the SLC-area…
Saturday, April 22, Karl and I are seeing “Free Fire” at the Thanksgiving Point MegaPlex theater’s 12:40 p.m. screening. Top-back row center. Join us (if you’re quiet during movies and don’t play on your phone like Andy does)… : )
      J

  4. GCR, there’s a point about halfway through your “what we’ve been watching” when you sound better than you ever have. You have a great voice and good things to say… please let us hear that. More voice, less room.

  5. Well, I hope you guys had a good time seeing Free Fall, but it was a pretty big stinker for me. I was with it for a while initially as the bow was being pulled back, but once the arrows (well, bullets) started flying, it was a whole lotta nothing, ultimately. Tedious and boring, even. After the first ten minutes of everyone shooting at each other and dragging themselves around on the ground, I thought, is there anything more to this, and there wasn’t.

I didn’t care about anyone or anything, and there was nothing really unique or compelling or witty about it. I got the sense from the trailer that it was going to have a certain humorous vibe to it, but it barely (and I mean very barely) ever did. For something with a similar feel, I’d much rather have seen Reservoir Dogs for the fifth time. 5.5
