Movie Podcast Weekly Ep. 233: Life (2017)

Episode 233 - Life 2017

The boys are back in town … mostly. This is Movie Podcast Weekly, Episode 233, where we get our first glimpse of Jason after his surgery. A very frail Jay makes a brief appearance to Feature Review Life (2017) with special guest Mattroid (of The Sci-Fi Podcast). Karl is M.I.A. Ryan is present with his cups, and this episode is hosted by Andy “The Angel of Death.” Be sure to join us for this very unusual episode of MPW, where you’ll also hear a “fake Feature Review” of “CHiPs,” which no one saw… Thanks for listening / tolerating!

If you’re new to our show… Movie Podcast Weekly typically features four hosts — Jason, Andy, Karl and Geek Cast Ry — along with frequent guests. We give you our verdicts on at least one new movie release from the current year that’s currently playing in theaters, as well as several mini reviews of whatever we’ve been watching lately. New episodes release every single week!

    • Thank you, G. It’s good to still be alive… : ) We recorded Ep. 234 a couple of nights ago (I will post it in the next couple of days), and I was able to host the whole show! For this next week (Ep. 235), I should be back in my home studio and everything! Thank heavens! : )

  1. Great to have you back, Jay, even in your weakened condition. I could never fill your MPW shoes, although it is true that I frequently poison puppies and kittens (one of the sad responsibilities of being the staff veterninarian for the local Animal Control office) and may have done some passable tee-ball coaching in my day. It’s also true that I love me some Avatar, so I’m probably disqualified anyway, although I can lift seven gallons of milk in one hand. (I will provide photographic evidence if necessary.) It’s not really true that I “like” Jupiter Ascending, but my 5/10 was slightly higher than Solo’s 4 and Mattroid’s 3.5, so there you have it. I believe my point was mostly that I’ve seen (much) worse, the Wachowskis make interesting choices even they’re clearly off the beam, and in about 10 more years, Jupiter Ascending will be a new generation’s Flash Gordon.

I totally didn’t see CHIPS over the weekend. It’s not really in the spirit of the original series, but Dax Shepard does a decent job of staging the motorcycle stunts and at least took the time to have characters say “Ponch” and “Poncherello” about 76 times. Isn’t that almost all that anyone remembers about CHiPs anyway? The scene where Michael Pena goes into a leather bar in drag and eats a banana is kinda funny, but it was a little on-the-nose when Dax and Mrs. Dax (real life wife Kristen Bell) ring the booty bell while riding a glass elevator from the first to fifteenth floor of the Beverly Hills Hilton with Aerosmith’s “Love In an Elevator” blaring on the soundtrack. When I not walked out of the theater after unseeing the movie, people were mostly comparing it to 22 Jump Street (the sequel, not the first one), which feels about right. 4.5/10

  2. I’m glad that you are sounding a bit better now Jay (you sounded terrible on HMP). I hope your recovery goes smoothly.

    • Hmm… interestingly enough, (much like Oz Perkins first two films) I believe Jason recorded this before HMP despite the latter coming out first. ?

    • Thanks. Yes, I recorded my brief appearance on MPW Ep. 233 (Life) on Monday, March 27, the day after being released from the hospital. Then I recorded my brief appearance on HMP Ep. 114 (Life, with Dino) on Wednesday, March 29. And finally, I recorded MPW Ep. 234 (which just released!) on Monday, April 3… It’s been a long road, but I’m slowly getting it back! Thanks for all the support, the *patience* and the well-wishes…
      J
